Chapter Sixteen

Olivia

I thought about our risky sex for the rest of the day. Even though we both didn’t want to keep our hands off one another, we were smart enough to. Charlie only slept for an hour before he was up again. The three of us played Monopoly for a couple of hours, then helped him with some schoolwork and soon enough, dinner and bedtime was upon us.

Once I had Charlie settled into bed, I sat down beside him with one of his favourite storybooks,The Loraxby Dr. Seuss.

“This is a nice room, isn’t it? What do you think?” I asked.

“I love the dinosaur blanket Emmett got for me.”

“It’s great! It matches your school bag.” I rubbed my hand over the soft blanket.

“Tomorrow can we go down on the beach?”

“I think we should wait until the end of the week before we do that. Your doctor is going to move you from a cast to a moon boot. It will be much easier then,” I said.

“Okay.”

“You know what we can do, though?”

“What?”

“Decorate your room.”

“We can?”

I loved how excited Charlie was about this idea. It was the first time in his life that he had his own space that he could do almost anything he wanted with. This could easily become his sanctuary if things worked out between me and Emmett.

I nodded at him. “We can use this week’s rent money to go and get a few things for you.”

“Can Emmett come?”

“We can ask.”

“Did I hear my name being spoken?” Emmett’s voice echoed from his bedroom.

“Yes!” Charlie and I shouted in unison.

I attempted to keep my cool as Emmett’s tall frame took up the doorway of Charlie’s bedroom with damp hair and a towel slung low around his waist and a toothbrush in his hand. Emmett clearly noticed me checking him out and flashed me a cocky grin.

Charlie didn’t notice a thing, thank goodness. “Emmett, will you come shopping with us tomorrow to get some things for my new bedroom?”

“Don’t worry. It won’t be a massive shopping spree or anything. Just a few things so we don’t have stuff strewn everywhere.”

“I’d be happy to come along.” Emmett walked away down the hall.

“There you go.” I high-fived Charlie. “Ready to readThe Lorax?”

“Yeah.” Charlie snuggled down and I opened the book.

We had read this story so often, that I barely had to concentrate. I hit all the beats and the tones with practiced precision, and soon enough, I was closing the book.

I stood up and kissed Charlie’s forehead. “Sleep well.”

“I love you, Mom.”

“I love you, too. Good night.” I was about to pull the door closed when Tank barged past me and laid down on the floor beside Charlie’s bed. It was clear the dog had decided that was where he was staying for the night.
