“Good.”

I looked at the nice white shelves, the navy dresser for his clothes, the coat hooks on the white backboard that offset the natural timber walls of the room. “This looks fantastic, you guys!”

Emmett pulled out the rug I’d chosen from Pottery Barn. He held it out to me. “Would you like to do the honors?”

I took it from him with a smile and threw it out. It unrolled like a dream and I settled it into place beside Charlie’s bed. I stepped onto it and allowed my toes to sink into the soft, powder blue material covered in white stars. Charlie relaxed on his bed while Emmett and I put the finishing touches to his room. There were new toys, new books, a desk with a lamp for schoolwork, blue curtains, and a kids’ sized armchair with blue cushions.

“Last, but not least . . ..” Emmett held up a model of a navy boat.

“Whoa, cool!”

“Now, it’s not the boat I was on, but it’s pretty close. Careful, now.” Emmett handed Charlie the model.

“Can you tell me all about when you were in the Navy?” Charlie asked.

“Sure, I can tell you some stuff.”

“Awesome!”

“How about we put the model up on your dresser?” I suggested.

“Okay.” He held it out to me, and I carefully placed it up there.

“How does that look?”

“Great! I love my new room!” Charlie exclaimed.

“It is pretty awesome. You’re one lucky kid,” I replied.

“Thanks, Emmett,” Charlie said.

Emmett patted Charlie’s shoulder. “You’re welcome.”

Today was a big day, a positive day with positive changes. I hoped they continued.
