I felt Latisha watch me while I drank the sweet tea. “How was your day?” she finally asked.

I sighed heavily.

“Hm, I thought as much. You work yourself too hard, Livvy.”

“I don’t have a choice,” I said, setting my glass down on the small plastic table with a thump.

“I know. A man is what you need. Then he can go off to work and you can look after your boy.”

I shook my head. “Even if I had a man, I wouldn’t stop working. But I wouldn't be working atSunshine City Market.”

“Hopefully you wouldn’t be living here, either. I love you as a neighbour, don’t get me wrong, but you’re better than this place.”

Her line of sight ran across our apartment block. It wasn’t a well-looked after place, but I made as much effort as I could keeping my place presentable and Latisha did the same. She was strict with her kids, made them do chores and contribute to the household, grounded them at the drop of a hat if they stepped out of line, and made sure they were doing well with their schooling.

“Well, it looks like I won’t be slowing down anytime soon because I have to do a double shift at the market on Friday.”

“What the hell? Doesn’t that boss of yours know you have a kid?”

“Yes, but he doesn’t care. He doesn’t even care about his own kids!” I threw my hands up in the air. “It’s just lucky Charlie has a playdate that afternoon. I know Rea will take good care of him. It’s the morning I’m worried about. I have to start work before Charlie starts school.”

Latisha patted my wrist. “I can make sure Charlie gets to school safely.”

“Are you sure? I know you have your hands full . . ..”

“He can walk with Danisha, Duke, and Jada. You know how Duke is; he won’t let anyone mess with your boy.”

Breathing a sigh of relief, I picked up my glass again. “Thank you.”

“I got you, boo.”

Latisha clinked her glass against mine and we whiled away the afternoon gossiping and watching the kids play. I even got to hold baby Tiana.
