I smothered a sob behind my hand and hid the phone away again. I silently warned Charlie to stay quiet.

I looked up to find that the airport was in sight. Instead of driving toward the main building, Miguel sped toward a hanger that contained a small white jet.

The cars were still on our asses, but Miguel had the upper hand. We would be on that plane before anyone ever stopped us, and Charlie and I would be prisoners for the rest of our lives.

Miguel threw the car into park. “Get the fuck out!”

I barely managed to unhook my seatbelt before he was dragging me out. I yelped as his fingers bit into my skin.

“Hey, stop hurting my mom!” Charlie screamed.

“Get on the plane!” Miguel demanded.

“B-but my suitcase . . .” I stammered.

“Forget the fucking suitcase!”

I pulled back against him. I had to buy us time. Miguel slapped me across my face before he threw me over his shoulder. “Let me go!” I shouted, punching his back as hard as I could.

“You hurt my mom again! I don’t want to go to Columbia with you!” Charlie bashed Miguel with his small fists and Miguel took Charlie none too gently by the wrist and hauled us both, kicking and screaming, toward the plane. “I want to stay with Emmett! He never hurts us!”

“Who the fuck is Emmett?” Miguel only faltered for a moment. He began to climb the stairs into the plane.

Sirens echoed through the hanger, but they would be too late. No one was stopping this plane now. Our fate was sealed.

I thought I heard my name being called, but I had to have been imagining it.

Miguel stopped again and I wished I could see why.

“Miguel Cortez. It’s an honour to finally meet you, sir,” a stern male voice said.

“You’re not my regular pilot,” Miguel said.

“No, I’m not.”

Miguel shook his head. “Who cares? Get this bird in the fucking air. We need to gonow.”

“This way.”

The man led us inside the aircraft and I began to sob. Miguel put me down and I sunk to the floor. All the fight was gone from me. Miguel dumped Charlie in a seat, but my son ran into my arms.

Miguel turned on the other man. “What are you waiting for? I told you to fly.”

“There’s been a change in schedule, Mr. Cortez.” The man held up a badge and ID card in a small black wallet. “Special Agent Telman. I’m with the FBI. We’ve been trying to catch up to you for a long, long time.”

Miguel pulled a huge silver gun from inside his jacket and immediately pulled the trigger and the agent did the same. I held my crying son as bullets zinged through the cabin. The sound of the gunshots was deafening.

“Cease fire!” a new voice shouted.

I slowly looked up to see a female agent at the doorway of the plane.

“We need him alive. We also need you alive, Telman.” She indicated Telman’s bloodied shoulder.

Telman shrugged. “It’s only a graze.”

Miguel wasn’t so lucky. A bullet had ripped through his right arm.

Special Agent Telman pounced on my ex-husband and pinned him, face-first, into the ground. He whipped a pair of cuffs around his wrists. “Miguel Cortez, you’re under arrest for human and drug trafficking, racketeering, murder, kidnapping, and extortion. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you can’t afford an attorney, one will be provided for you.”
