Chapter Twenty-Six
Olivia
It was so late by the time we got back to Emmett’s place. Charlie had fallen asleep at the FBI headquarters while I talked with the agents for hours about practically my entire life with Miguel. I told them how I met him, about events that had happened during our marriage, and about the things I’d learned during the day’s ordeal.
I kissed my sleeping son on the forehead and tucked him in, but instead of leaving the room, I sat and watched him for a time. I was incredibly grateful that he was safe. Tears welled in my eyes at the thought of what almost happened. I covered my mouth to hold in a sob as tears rolled down my cheeks.
“Olivia?” Emmett whispered when he appeared in the doorway. He took one look at me crying and in an instant, he was beside me with his arms wrapped around me. “Shh. You and Charlie are safe, sweetheart.”
I lifted my gaze to him. “Are we, though? Miguel is the tip of the iceberg. Sure, he might be the head of the snake, but he has men who happily do his bidding. What if they continue to watch us and what if they keep trying to take Charlie away from me?”
Emmett smoothed back my hair and cupped my cheek. “I won’t let that happen, Olivia.”
“You can’t guarantee that. You can’t be with us every minute of every day. I wish you could, but it’s unreasonable. Emmett, I’m so scared. I was under his control all these years and I didn’t even know it.”
When my voice rose, and Charlie stirred, we left the room to continue our conversation. I felt better when Tank laid next to my son’s bed and wouldn't budge. No one would get near my boy as long as that dog was nearby.
“I might have a solution to your problem. Let me think about it, okay? For now, we just need to relax and be grateful that you’re not in Cartagena right now.”
I allowed myself to be held by the man I nearly lost. “I’m sorry I ran out on you like that.”
“You were afraid. You had every right to be, more than I realised.” Emmett picked up the file.
“You took it out of the fireplace?”
“I’m glad I did. This helped us tonight. I was able to directly contact the agents who’ve been on Miguel’s case for years. But I feel like it’s also like the devil’s calling card. You were right to want to get rid of it.”
“I was wrong, though, Emmett. It wasn’t because of the file that Miguel came back. It was because he had spies in familiar places, and I suddenly disappeared. Your digging saved our lives.Yousaved our lives. You’re my hero, Emmett.” I kissed him for a few glorious moments until he broke it off.
“Still . . ..”
Emmett opened the fireplace, threw the file in on top of the logs, and struck up a match. We watched it burn for a few moments before he shut the door.
He pulled me into his arms again and his mouth hovered over mine. “I feel better now.”
I smiled and tugged on his shirt. “So do I.”
Our lips met again. His kiss was explosive and made warmth flow through my entire being. His tongue danced with mine and when he held me flush against him, I could feel his hardness pressing into my belly.
“I love you,” I murmured.
“I love you so much, sweetheart,” Emmett replied.
I slid my hands under his white T-shirt and felt him gasp as my fingers traced his abs. “I’ll never be distrustful of you again. You’re it for me, Emmett. You have my whole heart forever.”
Emmett’s lips and tongue trailed down my neck while his hands ran down my body to the swell of my arse. “You have no idea how happy that makes me.”
“I think you underestimate me, Mr. Shepherd,” I said as I lifted his shirt over his head.
Emmett arched his eyebrows as he took my top and bra off, exposing my erect nipples. “Do I?”
He got down on his knees and lathered each nipple in the attention it deserved, then kissed his way down my sternum and stomach. When he slowly opened my pants, I trembled with anticipation. My pants and panties dropped, and Emmett lowered me onto the couch.
He kissed my mound. “You’re incredible.”
He kissed my thigh. “You’re beautiful.”
He kissed my other thigh. “You’re intelligent and strong.”
