Logan nodded. “There’s that.”

“So, you’re new here, too, huh?” I asked.

“Yeah, kinda. I spent most of my career working out of San Diego, but I was transferred to Virginia Beach a few years back and then deployed from here straight to the Middle East within a couple of weeks. I chose to settle here on the Bay because it’s a good area to be in while I’m transitioning to civilian life. I get a good mix of the two worlds, you know?”

I understood trying to start anew, but I was yet to feel homesick. I wasn’t sure if I ever would. “Sure. You want to have some familiarity. I went straight for the completely out-there.”

“I wouldn’t say out-there. That would mean you going to Japan or South America or someplace like that.”

We laughed.

“You have a point.” I got lost in my thoughts for a few moments. Here Logan was once again being a nice guy, not expecting anything of me, not hitting on me. Just getting to know me and giving me a little info about himself, too. I’d never spoken with a man like this before. It would be mean of me to fob him off now. I pulled Natalie’s map and pamphlet out of my purse. “Want to explore the oceanfront with me?”

Logan leaned back on his heels. “Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure. Do you have a public transport pass?”

“I don’t need a pass, and neither do you.” Logan jerked his thumb back towards the house where a red pickup truck was parked in the driveway. “Come on, I’ll drive.”
