“I’m Tyrone, Malik’s buddy. Look, he’s in trouble and he needs help. I thought you might be able to help him.” His movements were quick and jumpy. The guy was extremely anxious. When his gaze fell on me, I was taken aback.

“Me?” I raised my eyebrows. “Not only am I more than a little busy right now, but I’m not exactly sure how could I help?”

“He said to tell you to contact Mark. You need to tell him he’s been made.”

I stared blankly at the young man.

Tyrone growled out a sigh. “Look, I know who he is but I’m on his side. Jamal knows he’s an undercover spy. Do you know what he’s going to do to him? You need to call Malik’s handlernow.”

Joe turned and gripped my arms. “Okay, Aria, this is serious shit.”

“Why? I don’t understand what’s happening. What does made mean? Who is this kid?” I gestured violently towards the young man.

Joe pulled me out of Tyrone’s earshot. “He’s Dark Vultures’ latest recruit and he’s the reason Logan went undercover in the first place. Tyrone’s a senator’s son, and Logan was assigned to convince him to get out.”

“He sure has convinced me,” Tyrone told us.

My mouth fell open. I guessed we weren’t far enough out of his earshot. “How do you know all of this?” I asked Joe.

“Because I’ve been undercover, too. I’m a P.I. from Midtown who grew up in Harlem, and I’ve been liaising with Cole Security on this issue. I was a prime candidate because I actually have worked part-time off and on as a bouncer around the city.”

“So, you’re not going to the Navy?” I asked.

“Yeah, I am. I had to wrap this up first, is all, so they delayed my posting for as long as possible.” Joe glanced back at Tyrone, who was jumping about like a jumping bean. “If Logan’s been made, it means his cover has been blown and he’s in real danger. We need to get Mark up here ASAP.”

My heart pounded as fear flowed through me. “Mark is in charge, right?”

“Of this mission, yeah.”

Joe pulled out his cell phone and dialled a number. Before he could press it to his ear, I snatched the phone away from him and stormed across the apartment.

“Joe, this is an unexpected call. I don’t like unexpected calls. What’s up?”

Upon hearing Mark’s voice, anger mixed with my fear and I gritted my teeth. “Get my boyfriend the hell out of that gang, Mark! Because if you don’t, I will reign hellfire down on you!”

“Who the hell is this?”

“My name is Aria Jones, and in case you’ve forgotten who I am, I’m Logan’s girl,” I snapped.

“Whoa, back up, spitfire. I remember you.” I imagined him holding his hands up placatingly. “What’s going on?”

“How should I know?” I shouted down the line. “I’ve been left in the dark this whole time! Get off your pale bloody arse and come to New York and find out! Oh, and make sure you bring an army with you, because Logan deserves that.”

“Put Joe on,” Mark ordered.

I curled my free hand into a fist. “Don’t you order me around!”

“Aria!”

The way he snapped out my name caused me to pause.

“I need to know the situation. Let me talk to Joe.”

I released a shaky sigh. “Fine.” I handed the phone back to its owner, who was all business now as he and Tyrone discussed the situation with Twilight. I glanced between Mama and Joe. I wanted to go with them and find Logan, but Mama needed me. I wasn’t sure what to do. I wrapped my arms around myself and fought back tears.

I wasn’t sure how long it was before Joe hung up and came back to me. “Aria, I can see you want to be in two places right now, and I understand. But we’ve got this under control. You need to be where your skills are best utilized and so do we. We’ll get Logan out, I promise. You take care of Mama and her pups.”

“But Logan needs m—” I broke off when a sob escaped me.
