Zoey threw a hand over her mouth. “Oh, crap. What did he do to you?”

“He wouldn’t take no for an answer and then he insulted my body.”

“That fucking asshole!” Zoey cried. “I hope you let him have it.”

“Look, I’m not like you and Lily, okay? I’m not outgoing, I hate big crowds, and I’m not a one-night stand kind of woman. I thought we went out as a trio for a girls’ night, but it quickly became obvious to me that it wasn’t the case. So, I vacated the Hot Tuna and found something else to do.”

Zoey sent me a quizzical look.

“Dinner. With a hot guy.” Lily winked at Zoey.

Zoey raised her eyebrows.

“I never said he was hot,” I snapped.

“It didn’t happen to be the same guy who saved you from tripping over, did it?” Zoey asked.

I pushed my hair behind my ear. “Maybe.”

Zoey nodded at Lily. “Definitely hot.”

“It doesn’t matter if he was hot, it’s not like I’m ever going to see him again. We didn’t exchange numbers.”

“Why the hell not?” Zoey demanded.

“Because it wasn’t like that.”

Zoey put her hands on her hips. “But how do you know if it could be like that if you don’t give things a chance?”

“Because men don’t look at me that way. They either think I’m desperate enough to sleep with anyone or I don’t cross their mind. None of them are interested inme.I’m sorry, but I won’t give it up to a random stranger who doesn’t give two fucks about who I am.”

Lily narrowed her eyes at me. “What did you do at dinner?”

“You mean besides eat food?”

“Yes. Did you sit there in awkward silence and then leave separately?”

“No.”

“So, what did you do?” she repeated.

“We talked. We laughed. Then he walked me back here to make sure I stayed safe.”

Zoey tapped her chin. “Seems like he wasn’t overly interested in using you.”

“And he didn’t dismiss you without another glance,” Lily continued.

“You should see him again,” Zoey said.

“But this vacation is supposed to be about us,” I insisted.

Lily shook her head. “It’s supposed to be about whatever you make it. It’s okay to go off and do your own thing, meet people, make friends. We’re so sorry about what happened last night at the Hot Tuna. I guess we didn’t fully understand the extent of your discomfort.”

Zoey twisted up her mouth. “We’re sorry, babe.”

“Can you forgive us?” Lily asked with a pout.

“Of course, I can.” I sighed. “I suppose I need to be more self-reliant. I mean, especially since I live in New York and not in rural Australia, right?”
