“Righto.”

As the driver pulled into the traffic, I messaged Ruben.

Me:I can’t stop thinking of last night.

His response took a while to come through.

Ruben:Think of it as an early Christmas gift. Are you working today?

Me:Yes.

Ruben:Have a wonderful day.

Me:I will.

I set my phone aside and double-checked the paperwork I needed the hospital to sign. When my cell trilled, I answered it almost subconsciously, “Sienna speaking.”

“I’m not going to let you run from me.” His voice was stern, and even though I was still irritated about this morning, a shiver still traveled down my spine.

With a roll of my eyes, I took a deep breath and rested my head back against the car seat. “Why are you calling me, Augustus?”

“Because you left abruptly with your ridiculous assumptions.”

“Look, I get it, okay? We’re casual. Maybe a one-off, even. I’m cool with it, and so is Ruben. You know why? Because we have each other. You could never imagine what real love is like, but I have it with Ruben.”

“We have a spark, Sienna. Something burns within us, something we can barely control. You can’t deny it.”

“No, I don’t deny it. But it isn’t love, my lord.”

“I’m not fucking my personal chef. I never have, and I never will.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Don’t you fuck everyone at some point?”

Augustus scoffed. “I may enjoy sex and sex parties, but it doesn’t mean I’m not selective. For fuck’s sake, Sienna, give me some credit.”

I squeezed my eyes shut. My heart thundered in my chest. Augustus was exciting and entirely bad for me. I knew what this feeling was. I had experienced it before.

“Come back, hotness.” His fevered whisper was too much.

“I can’t,” I murmured.

“I’ll make it worth your while.”

“Aug…”

“I fucking love it when you call me that,” he admitted.

I glanced at the large building the taxi was pulling up beside. “I have to go. I’m at Children’s Health Foundation.”

“Don’t you dare hang up on me,” he commanded, his tone telling me to obey.

“See you at the interview, Lord Huntington.” I hung up and released a sigh.

With a thank you, I handed the driver my fare, then with my papers in hand, I marched toward the hospital entrance and to the main desk. “Hi. My name is Sienna Beachley. I have an appointment with the fundraising department.”

“One moment, please, Ms. Beachley.”

While I waited for the receptionist to contact the correct person, I couldn’t shake myself from the edge Augustus had put me on once again. He was all too good at trying to draw me back to him like a bee to a blooming flower. I needed to resist the draw he had on me, even if he continued to consume my thoughts.
