“Ha,” Delaney said. “Wouldn’t you like to know.”

“I really would.”

“I really would, too.” She grinned. After a moment, when Sean hadn’t moved a muscle, Delaney added, “Sunny reminds me a lot of Leilani. Not in looks,” she went on. “They look nothing alike. But they have a similar personality. Kind of girly and sweet, but not spoiled. Leilani was my last serious relationship. When I was stationed in Kaneohe.”

Sean took a moment to mull that over. “What happened? To you and Leilani?”

Delaney shrugged. “I moved. As usual.”

“She didn’t want to go with you?”

“To Camp Leatherneck?”

“Ah.”

“We kept in touch for a while. Then things just kind of faded away. That’s what happens with all my relationships. I leave—and in the absence of each other, we fade.”

Sean gave a dry laugh. “Have you ever thought about staying?”

Delaney shrugged. “We’ll see how it goes. So far, I’m not so impressed with permanence.”

“Right.” Sean could see how, between the stolen bike and the Dudes bashing her shop at every turn, she might not think she’d made the right decision. If Sean’s instincts were right—and they usually were—Delaney Monroe was struggling to not hit the road and leave everything behind. Which meant it was time for him to go. At least for now. “’Night, Delaney.”

“’Night, Detective.”
