“I actually do,” Tabitha said. “But how about you? You seem like something’s eating away at you.”

Surprise flickered over Delaney’s face. “Damn, you’re good,” she muttered. Then she shook her head. “I’ve got some stuff going on. Personal stuff. Relationship stuff. Mom stuff. But I’ll be okay.”

Ah, Mom Stuff. Tabitha didn’t know Delaney’s situation with that, but if there was one thing Tabitha did know it was that Mom Stuff could rip you to the core. “Did you talk to your uncles about it?”

Delaney sniffed a sad kind of laugh. “No. They worry about me enough. I definitely wasn’t going to bring up my mother during their brief stay. Then they’d never leave.” Delaney tried another laugh, but didn’t pull it off.

“You sure you don’t want to talk? I’ve got time. God knows, I owe you.”

“You don’t owe me anything.” Delaney’s smile fell and her voice was serious. “And I’m going to be fine.”

“You sure?” Tabitha repeated. Delaney’s mouth said one thing and every other part of her body and soul seemed to be saying another.

“Yep.” Delaney nodded, just a little too emphatically. “You go ahead and get home, Steele, and don’t give me another thought. I’ll always be fine.”
