“What’s the plan here, Gabe?” she asked. “We’ll talk and then what? You’ll just let me go?”

He shrugged, “Sure, but I was thinking that we could have some fun first.”

“Not going to happen,” she hissed. “You come near me, and I will fucking tear your balls off, asshole.”

“Ahh, there’s the real Kai,” Gabe said. “You have everyone else fooled into believing that you’re so sweet and innocent in all of this, but you’re really a bitch,” he said.

“Yeah, so you’ve said. In fact, I believe you called me a lying bitch,” she taunted.

“Well, I wasn’t wrong,” Gabe said. “Listen, I have a few things to do, but I’ll be back as soon as I can. You’ll be good here, right? I mean, you don’t mind hanging out, do you, Kai?” He was a complete asshole, and she wasn’t going to dignify his teasing with a response. Well, she wasn’t going to answer his questions, at least.

“Go fuck yourself, Gabe,” she spat.

He chuckled and started up the steps. “See you soon, sweetheart.” She watched as he walked up the stairs and winked at her when he got to the top. She listened for a door to close but instead heard another man’s voice. They were talking in hushed whispers, and she couldn’t make out what they were saying. Kai strained to listen to their conversation, hearing fragments of what was being said.

“You can’t keep her here,” she heard the other man say.

“I just need a few more hours, and then, I’ll move her.” Kai had read the literature that the court gave her when she turned in the paperwork for the restraining order. They contained some pretty dark statistics about victims of abuse and violence. She remembered reading to fight if her attacker was trying to take her someplace. That leaving point A and traveling to point B lessoned her chances of being found. After that, the pamphlet said that being moved to a third location made it nearly impossible to be found. She wondered what the hell they expected the victims to do in that kind of situation, never dreaming that she’d be the victim, having to try to figure out what to do about Gabe saying that he was going to move her again in a few hours. She’d fight like hell—that was the plan, but if he stuck her in the neck with that sedative again, how could she fight?

“Where are you going now?” the guy asked.

“I have something that I need to do, but I’ll be back, and when I get here, I’ll move her,” Gabe assured.

“What do I do with her until then?” the guy asked.

“Nothing,” Gabe said, “don’t even go down there. She’s tricky and you’ll help her without even knowing it. Don’t fall for any of her tricks.”

“You make her sound like a witch or something,” the guy said.

“She’s worse than a witch,” Gabe spat. “Just do as I say and leave her alone.” She heard footsteps above and guessed that Gabe was leaving. Her only shot at getting out of there before Gabe came back to move her, was to get the guys she had heard talking to Gabe to come down to the basement. She’s scream herself horse if she had to.

She waited to hear the front door shut and waited a few minutes to make sure that Gabe was really gone. Kai was just about to start screaming at the top of her lungs when someone rang the doorbell. Taking a chance with one of Gabe’s friends was her only plan, and it might work, but she’d have more luck with a complete stranger who didn’t know Gabe.

Kai listened for someone to answer the front door and heard their muffled voices when she decided that it was now or never. “Help,” she screamed at the top of her lungs. “Help, help, help,” she continuously shouted. She screamed her lungs out hoping that someone would hear her.

“Kai,” she heard a man call. God, please don’t let that be Gabe. If he came back early to proceed with his plan to move her, she’d be screwed.

“I’m down here,” she shouted. “Help me, please.” She saw Ryker turn the corner at the base of the stairs and she let out a sob that she had been holding.

“Oh thank God,” she breathed. “I was so scared that it was Gabe. He just left but said he’d be back later to move me. Where am I?” she asked.

“You’re on fraternity row,” Ryker said. “When you didn’t go home after class, Taz got worried, and we headed over to campus. That’s where we found your car and talked to security. They had footage of Gabe taking you and the security guy gave us a heads up that he came up here a lot. This is his fraternity,” Ryker said. She had no idea that Gabe was in a fraternity, but she never claimed to really know the guy.

“Where’s Taz?” she asked.

“He’s taking care of the asshole who answered the door,” Ryker said. “He’ll be done in just a second. Where’s the rest of the guys that live here?” he asked.

“I overheard something about there being a big sorority party this weekend. I’m guessing that they’re all over there. From what I could hear, there’s only one guy upstairs and then, Gabe, but he left. He said that he’d be back to move me soon. Where’s Taz?” Kai asked again.

“I’m here,” Taz said, “sorry, honey, but I had to tie up a loose end. Are you all right?” he asked.

“I will be as soon as one of you finds the key to these,” she said, wiggling her handcuffs.

“Shit, give me a minute,” Taz said. He ran back up the stairs and she could hear him yelling at someone to give him the fucking keys to the handcuffs.

“He seems a bit on edge,” she teased.

“You have no idea,” Ryker said. “He’s been going crazy since you were taken. He saw that video footage of Gabe holding a gun at you, forcing you into his car, and he freaked out. The guy in security was helpful, but we’re on borrowed time here. He’s calling it in to the cops, and they’ll check here too. Taz wants to get you out of here before that happens, but I say we set up a little surprise for Gabe. You said that he's coming back here to move you?” he asked.
