Taz

Taz had a rough idea of what Kai planned on doing, but he was going to make sure that she wasn’t in any danger while pulling it off. He listened in on her phone call to the detective who helped them the night of the break-in. Kai had asked him to meet them at the frat house. That she had been kidnapped and drugged by Gabe and held against her will at his fraternity. The detective wanted to call in half of the police force, but she talked him down, asking him to give her a chance to help him catch Gabe, once and for all. If they were successful, he’d end up in jail for a damn long time, and that worked for Taz.

Kai convinced the detective to come alone and when she handed Taz back his phone, she was smiling like a loon. “Honey, you were just drugged and abducted,” he reminded. “Why are you smiling like a crazy person? Are you okay?”

“I’m better than okay,” she breathed. “I’m finally getting my life back and there’s nothing that Gabe can do to stop me from making that happen. He’s going to lose and tonight, I’ll be free—we will both be free, Taz.” He pulled her from the wooden chair that she had been bound to and wrapped his arms around her.

“I was so worried,” he whispered. “I didn’t think I’d ever see you again, and I’d never be able to tell you that I’ve fallen in love with you, Kai.”

“You have?” she whispered.

“Do we really need to do this mushy stuff now?” Ryker groaned.

“Yes,” Kai insisted, “hush,” she ordered. “I love you too, Taz,” she said. “I have for a while now.”

“Good,” he said, “now, let’s catch us an asshole. We have a life to plan together.”

“I’d like that,” Kai agreed. “Listen, I figure we have about another hour until Gabe gets back here to move me. When he gets here, I’ll be sitting in that chair, but you two will be standing over there and we’ll get the jump on him.”

“No,” Ryker and Taz said together.

“What do you two mean by telling me no?” Kai asked.

“We mean that you will not be sitting in that chair when Gabe gets back here,” Taz insisted. “It’s not safe. He has a gun, remember?”

“I remember,” she scoffed. “We should go upstairs and let the detective in. He said that he was on campus because security had called in my abduction. He’s going to hold off on calling in the calvary, but he won’t be able to hold them off forever.”

“Shit, this just keeps getting better and better,” Taz grumbled.

“Was the asshole that we have tied up upstairs in on all of this?” Ryker asked.

“I have no idea. I did hear him tell Gabe that he couldn’t keep me here, but he didn’t make any move to help me. Gabe told him that I was dangerous, and I guess he believed him.”

“Well, let’s go on up and see if he had Gabe’s cell number,” Ryker said. “I’m betting that if our new friend upstairs texts Gabe to let him know that something’s wrong with you, he’ll come back sooner.”

There was a knock at the door and Taz grabbed her hand. “Let’s let the detective in, and then, we’ll let him tell us the plan. I’m betting he’s more experience in stuff like this than the three of us.” They walked upstairs and Taz let the detective in. They exchanged quick pleasantries, and he asked if Kai was all right. She lied and told him that she was, but Taz knew that she wasn’t. As soon as they got home, she’d fall apart, and he’d let her. He’d be right by her side, but he’d let her fall apart if that was what she needed.

“We kind of have an idea,” Kai admitted. The detective rolled his eyes, making her smile.

“Let’s have it,” he said.

“Well, we were thinking of using that guy’s phone to text Gabe, telling him that something was wrong with Kai. He’ll get back here sooner, and we’ll avoid a big production of cop cars and officers hanging out around here. If Gabe comes back to that circus, he’ll take off and we’ll never get him.”

“All right,” the detective said. “As long as you three stay out of the way when he gets here.”

“I agree,” Taz said. “Kai needs to be out of that asshole’s reach. He’s armed.”

“No, I said that the three of you need to stay out of my way. I’ll handle this, but I’m going to have to call in back up.”

“Won’t that defeat the purpose of keeping this on the down low?” Ryker asked. “What about the cop cars in the driveway?”

“We all need to move our vehicles,” the detective said. “When he gets back, he needs to think that things are exactly as he left them. Otherwise, he’ll bolt, and we’ll lose our chance to arrest him.”

“I’ll move my truck and you stay here with Kai,” Ryker offered. “Get that guy’s cell phone and text Gabe,” he said, nodding to the guy that Taz had tied up in the corner of the kitchen.

The detective nodded, “Keep your text message simple. Say that Gabe’s guest isn’t feeling well, and he needs to get back here as soon as possible. Don’t go into specifics. Make it short and sweet, so he’ll believe it.”

Taz pulled the guy’s cell phone out of his back pocket as the guy shouted at him to give it back. “We’re going to need to muzzle him,” Ryker said. He pulled a red bandana from his jeans and shoved it into the guy’s mouth.
