Her mom and Lina both nodded. Lina’s parents lived out there, and they were taking Gavin for a month.

“Should be fun.”

“You know our offer still stands,” Lina said, referring to their invitation for Sam to come along.

“I know, but Dad needs help.”

Carol dropped her hands to her sides with a heavy sigh. “I told him to hire movers to get it over with. You don’t need to be stressed out about going through all that junk.”

“It’s fine. I don’t mind. Plus, the surgery…”

“Yeah, I know.” Her mom then slid her arm around Sam’s shoulders again. She was two inches shorter than Sam and stood on her toes to kiss her daughter’s head. “You’re a good person. Much better than I.” She flicked her fingers up by her temple. “That man tries the patience of a saint.”

Lina tugged Carol toward her. “Are you trying to say you’re a saint?”

They both laughed as Gavin poked his head out, his hair much neater than usual. “Ava and her parents should be here soon.”

“You nervous?” Lina asked, fixing his button-down shirt so it looked less wrinkled. “You look nervous.”

He snorted. “I’m fine.”

Sam and her mom caught each other’s gaze, exchanging knowing smiles at his lie, and for a moment, they did seem like one happy family.

“All right, then.” Carol clapped her hands. “Gav, you finish setting the table. Sam, can you grab some drinks from the refrigerator? Honey, you stay beautiful.” She kissed Lina, and Gavin gagged. “Hey. Don’t think I didn’t see you making out with Ava in your car last weekend. Didn’t hear me making a peep about it, didya?”

Gavin’s cheeks flamed red as he turned his back to them, fulfilling his duty to set out the plates and utensils.

Ava and her parents showed up a few minutes later, and dinner was fine, if not a little awkward. Her parents seemed to be a little too happy with how Carol was now married to a woman. They tried to prove how cool they were with it by telling everyone how they smoked pot in college. Real liberal flagbearers, they were.

But at least Sam got a good laugh out of it. Anything to take her mind off Mike.

Which wasn’t the easiest thing to do.

She spent the entire next day trying not to think of the boy next door. They’d gone for their usual walk in the morning, and aside from some sly smiles, it wasn’t much different. But all afternoon as she cleaned out the kitchen cabinets of anything unnecessary, he’d sent her texts. Online quizzes of whatTwilightcharacter she was or theories about how some people thought Bella was part wolf or that she was really a reincarnation of Edward’s soul.

Then during the stuffy graduation ceremony, she recalled their time together in his bed. His mouth on her, his hand in her underwear, his fingers bringing her to orgasm. She didn’t know if she was sweating from the memories or because there was no air conditioning. Either way, her bra was soaked with perspiration by the time she got home, but the cold shower didn’t help.

Mike seemed to want to keep things as slow as possible between them, but she didn’t have time for slow. She had a mere two months, and then she was gone. Sam needed as much of him as she could get in as little time as possible.

Mike dressed in jeans and a pale blue polo shirt before grabbing his keys. He didn’t have an exact plan for his date with Sam tonight, only that he wanted to get her alone and not in the basement of his parents’ house.

Days ago, he had Samantha pliant and soft, breathing hard with pink skin, begging for more, and still, he held back. He couldn’t pinpoint exactly why he kept stopping himself—no, fuck. He knew why. This summer fling had a time limit, but he wanted to make it last for as long as he could.

He’d always been patient and understood that good things took time, even as a kid. Improving his swing in baseball, it took time. His mother’s homemade chocolate chip cookies that were so delicious but piping hot out of the oven, he waited, unlike his brother, who stuffed them in his mouth, inevitably burning his tongue. Getting back on his feet after his amputation, that was weeks, and to get back to what he could physically do before took even longer. But he put in the hard work. Now, he was attempting to slow time down, wring out every last moment he had with Samantha. Just because this was summer fun didn’t mean he wanted it to be forgettable.

Walking upstairs, he was greeted by his mother. “Hey, where are you headed?”

“Out,” he said, jingling his car keys in his palm, and when he didn’t say any more, his mom smiled.

“Okay. You think you’ll be late?”

“I’m not sure,” he said, desperate to get away, though she hadn’t budged. In fact, with the way her eyes swept over him, he didn’t think he’d get out of the house in the next minute, so he set his feet for her oncoming conversation.

“You know your father and I love having you here.”

Mike nodded.
