“Yeah, he’s been extra affectionate lately. Spending more time at home than at the restaurant. We’re good. How about you?” Laney said to Sam. “How’s your Marine?”

“He’s notmyMarine.”

“No?”

“Why have we not gotten any pictures of him yet?”

“About that,” she started. “He’s a personal trainer, and he was telling me the other day that he’s struggling to build his business. I told him you might be able to help him out?”

Laney nodded absently as she grabbed her phone from the edge of the pool. “What’s his last name?”

“For what?” Sam asked.

Laney kept her attention on her screen as she tapped her thumb on it. “Stalking.”

“Obviously,” Gem added.

Sam chucked an ice cube at Laney. She missed by a mile. “He’s not on social media a lot.”

“Good for him,” Bronte said, her vowels becoming a little longer, her head tipped back up to the night sky.

“That’s why he needs help,” Sam finished.

With her gaze still down, Laney asked, “What’s his last name?”

“Oh!” Gem lifted her fist in triumph. “I know. It’s…something animal-sounding, right?” She snapped three times. “Jimmy did tell me. It’s… What’s the name of a baby cow?”

Sam rolled her eyes. “Calf?”

“No, that’s not it.” Gem waved like she was scrubbing down a whiteboard. Clearly, the alcohol was getting to everybody.

“Veal?” Bronte suggested.

Gem slapped her hand down on the water. “I meant calf isn’t his last name.”

“Dear Jesus.” Sam poured herself more champagne. “It’s Ewing!”

Gem pointed at her. “Ewing!”

Laney’s thumbs raced over her phone. “What animal is that?”

“A ewe is a female sheep,” Sam told them.

“Found him!” Laney held up her phone, beaming.

“Record time. Excellent work,” Gem said, giving up her Sophia tumbler and drinking straight from the bottle.

“He’s got an Instagram.”

“He does?” Besides their short conversation the day before, Sam and Mike had never discussed social media or traded handles. She had no idea.

“Mike Ewing, 259 followers,” Laney said. “Well, now sixty.”

“What? No! Don’t follow him.” In her haste, Sam fell off her raft with a splash in the water, and by the time she came back up, Laney had already passed off her phone.

“He’s cute, Sammy.”

“Aww, look at the one with his brothers. They all kind of look alike except for their hair. That one’s Jimmy, right?”
