Jason sighed and then scooped her up, eliciting an unexpected squawk from her.

“Sometimes I think you’re like this on purpose,” he said, holding her like a rag doll.

Gem swatted at him, her head upside down. “Iknowyou’re like this on purpose.”

“We’ll be back to say goodbye,” he said to the girls then spun around.

Gem groaned. “Not so fast.”

Jason said something that had her laughing as he carried her away.

“They’re not going to pack,” Sam said.

“Definitely not,” Bronte agreed.

Sam held up her hand to shield her eyes from the sun when she tilted her head back at Laney, who also stood up. “And where are you going?”

“I got my period this morning,” she said, and Bronte and Sam both commiserated in her agony with frowns, and Laney departed the table with a wave.

That left Sam with the bride.

“So, tell me honestly,” she said to Bronte. “You like being married?”

“Well, it’s only been about twelve hours, but so far, so good. Why?” Bronte smiled. “You changing your mind on the institution?”

Sam lifted a shoulder. “Mike and I were talking last night.”

Her friend didn’t say anything, merely brushed her bangs out of her eyes and raised her brow.

“I told him I didn’t know if I wanted to get married. He made some convincing arguments.”

Bronte nudged Sam’s shoulder with her own. “Convincing arguments like he loves you?”

“No.” Her cheeks burned. “He didn’t tell me that.”

“But you love him, though?” Bronte guessed in that intuitive way she had.

Sam swallowed down the lump in her throat and met her friend’s steady gaze, her silence answer enough. Bronte pressed her hands to her chest.

“I’m so happy for you.”

“Happy for me? Nothing‘s happened yet,” Sam said, trying to play it off.

“So, wait. You didn’t tell him either?”

Sam shook her head.

“Samantha.”

“What? Don’t say my name like that.”

Bronte tsked her, sitting back against the chair. “Tell him. What are you waiting for?”

“I can’t just blurt it out.”

“Why not?”

Sam huffed, waving her hand down the length of Bronte’s body. “Marriage is changing you.”
