She stopped mid-chew and seemed a little embarrassed by his attention and he was about to put her mind at ease when…

What do I say?

What’s my pickup line?

What are words???

Shit.

Gently, he cleared his throat and forced a smile. “Hey.”

Putting a hand over her mouth, it looked like she wanted to finish chewing before she smiled up at him. “Hi.”

His throat went dry and he felt like a complete doofus. Taking a quick sip of his beer, he tried again. “Sorry, I swear I normally know how to speak.”

She blushed and gave him the sweetest smile and he was a goner.

“I’m Jack,” he said and instantly wondered why he went for the abbreviated version of his name. He never did that. But rather than correcting himself, he just went with it. “I couldn’t help but notice how much you seemed to be enjoying yourself over here, and I felt compelled to come over and introduce myself.”

Lame, dude. Totally lame.

“I’m Savannah,” she said and her voice had a husky quality to it, which added to her overall appeal. “Would you like to join me?”

It was hard not to appear overly anxious, but he managed a simple nod. “Thanks.” Sliding into the booth, he saw that she was eating loaded potato skins. “Ah, I was wondering what these were.”

“They’re insanely good,” she said. “You have to try them.”

“Are you sure? I mean…I can order another plate so I’m not taking any away from you.”

“Are you kidding? There is no way I could eat them all. Plus, there is a burger on the menu that I’m dying to try, so I don’t want to overdo it with the appetizer.”

“I can appreciate that. So…what’s the burger?”

“The jalapeño bacon burger,” she said with a grin. “I almost skipped the appetizer all together and went directly to the entrée, but it’s been years since I’ve had loaded potato skins.” Reaching out, she snagged one and put it on her plate. “Seriously, try them. And dip it in the ranch dressing instead of the sour cream. It’s amazing.”

In that moment, Jackson would swear he fell a little in love. This woman was beautiful, friendly, loved spicy food, and didn’t make any excuses for it? Hell, he wasn’t sure he’d ever met anyone like that before.

Without a word, Jamie walked by and put a plate on the table for him.

“Well, that was efficient,” Savannah said with a small laugh. “I’ll be honest, this is my first time here and I wasn’t sure if I’d like it, but between the service, the atmosphere, and these potato skins, I’m definitely becoming a fan.”

“This is my first time here too. A buddy of mine has been raving about it, so I finally decided to give it a try.” He helped himself to one of the skins and took a bite.

And let out a very unmanly moan.

“See?” she said giddily. “I told you they were amazing! But dunk it in the ranch the next time. Trust me, you won’t be sorry.”

So he did, and he wasn’t.

“Holy crap, is that good!”

Nodding, Savannah took another bite of hers. “I always thought you could only use sour cream on these, but when the waiter suggested the ranch, I figured I’d try it.” Then she took a small spoonful of sour cream. “But this is still good too.”

He had to agree.

Jamie walked back over and gave him a knowing grin before looking at Savannah. “Have you had a chance to look at the menu?”

Jackson took a moment to do just that while Savannah placed her order. He didn’t want to be weird and order the same burger, but…damn. It sounded fantastic.
