No one was going to intrude on this moment.

She melted against him and, as gently as he could, he lowered them to the sand as he took the kiss deeper. It had been a long time since he’d kissed a woman, but it had never felt like this.

It was soft and sensual one moment, and then deep and delicious the next.

One of her hands smoothed up his back and up into his short hair. Her nails gently scratched his scalp and it was definitely a turn on.

He took the kiss deeper still.

If this was going to be the one and only time he was going to be allowed to do this, he wanted to make it last—make it something that stayed with her and kept her awake at night just like he was certain it was going to do for him.

Over and over, he couldn’t get enough; he wanted to learn the taste of her, memorize the way she hummed as she pressed closer. His hands slowly skimmed from the soft skin of her cheek, down the slender column of her throat, and along her arm to her hip. There wasn’t one thing he wanted to miss because it was all they were going to have. Once either of them came up for air—or came to their senses—this was over, so he was going to hold on to it for as long as humanly possible.

All he could think of was how sweet she smelled, how good she felt, and how freaking unfair life was. Savannah might not have appreciated the fact that Cash essentially shared all her secrets, but to Jackson, it was a blessing. He learned more about her in those few minutes than he probably ever would, and while she saw it as embarrassing, he saw a woman who overcame so much and was still standing—still smiling.

Still kissing him like a damn dream.

With a low growl, he crowded closer until they were intimately pressed together from head to toe—each on their side in the sand. One of her legs slowly crept up and hooked over his and all sorts of erotic images played in his head. This was messy and far too public, but given the chance, he’d take this further and make love to her right here on the beach with the sun on his back, the waves crashing around them, and not a care in the world.

But he couldn’t.

And now he was wanting things he couldn’t have and being reckless was only going to make things harder.

With one last swipe of his tongue against hers, he broke the kiss. Resting his forehead against hers, he wished things could be different, that he could make up for all the tragedies she’d suffered, that they were two different people meeting under completely different circumstances.

But they weren’t and he couldn’t.

Swallowing hard, he raised his head and when she opened her eyes and blinked up at him, it took every ounce of self-control to keep him from diving in for another taste.

Licking her lips, she gave him a shy smile, but neither seemed to know what to say.

Jackson rolled back and into a sitting position before reaching out a hand to help her do the same. Only…Savannah didn’t just sit up. She stood and brushed as much of the sand off of herself that she could. Then she reached down and picked up her sandals.

“Thank you,” she whispered before turning and walking away.

This time, he wasn’t going to follow or chase after her. For the first time in his life, he wasn’t going to sit and think about himself. He would respect her wishes and let her go. Things were about to get wild when Cash called his brothers, and that’s where his focus needed to be.

He wasn’t sure how long he stayed in that spot in the sand, but when he finally stood, the sun had definitely shifted a bit and there were more people crowding the beach. Standing, he mimicked Savannah’s earlier move and brushed as much sand as he could off of himself before turning and heading back to the parking lot.

No sooner had he climbed into the truck than his phone was vibrating with an incoming text.

Austin: Hey. Got a minute?

It was possible his brother was just checking in with him, but it was more than likely him reaching out to talk about Cash. So rather than texting back, Jackson simply called.

“Hey!” Austin said as he answered. “I wasn’t expecting you to call. I just figured you’d text me back when you had a minute.”

“Yeah, well…I’ve got as many minutes as you need,” he said easily.

“Is that a good or a bad thing?”

Laughing softly, he replied honestly, “Depends on the moment.”

“Ah. Gotcha.”

“So…what’s up?”

His brother let out a long breath before he spoke again. “I heard you talked to Garrett the other day about Dad.”
