And bra.

Trying not to be too obvious, she casually crossed her arms over her chest. “Um…didn’t you get his text? He said he reached out to everyone to cancel for tonight. He was tired and went to bed already.”

“Oh, so, um…” he looked around again, one hand scrubbing along the back of his neck. “I didn’t get any message.”

Yeah, she’d figured that part out.

But then again…it was odd that Jackson was even here considering he’d been out with his father earlier. All week he hadn’t come for dinner, so why tonight?

It would be rude to ask, but her curiosity was killing her.

“Cash didn’t mention that you were coming,” she finally said. “I thought it was just your brothers and Mia and Emma.”

“At lunch he said it would be nice if…you know…all his kids were here so…” With a nervous laugh, he added, “Here I am!”

They stood there in awkward silence and if she were a little more presentable, she’d possibly ask him to stay for dinner, but…she wasn’t presentable and was wildly aware of it. “Well…I’ll tell him you stopped by or…you could just tell him yourself when you come over tomorrow. You know, whatever. I’m sure he’ll feel bad about you not seeing his texts and all.”

“I didn’t see it because I didn’t get one.”

“Okay,” she said and waited for him to go.

But he didn’t.

“Something smells good. Cash mentioned something about some sort of spicy Mexican dish. We have that in common, apparently. I love spicy foods too.”

Savannah nodded. “It’s a spicy skillet chicken enchilada casserole. Nothing fancy. I had it all started when he told me he texted all of you to cancel.”

The look of annoyance was obvious. “Well, maybe he texted my brothers and forgot that he had invited me.” He took a small step toward the kitchen. “It really does smell good.”

“There will be plenty of leftovers for the two of you to have for lunch tomorrow.”

Why won’t he just leave? Can’t he tell how uncomfortable I am?

“Leftovers are fine, but I bet it tastes the best right out of the oven.” Then he gave her that boyish grin of his and she knew exactly what he was getting at.

He wanted to stay.

And dammit…there was a small part of her that wanted it too.

No matter how much she shouldn’t.

Grab life by the horns!

Oh, right. That.

With a small sigh, she blurted out, “Do you want to stay for dinner?”

Jackson’s entire face lit up. “I thought you’d never ask.”

“Just…give me a minute,” she said as she walked past him and straight to her room. It would look ridiculous if she completely changed, but she had to at least put her bra back on. Two minutes later, she was back out and Jackson frowned. “What’s the matter?”

“Well that was a damn shame.”

“What was?”

“You didn’t need to go and…you know…put anything back on. I was perfectly fine with you the way you were.”

With a laugh, she walked toward the kitchen. “Yeah, well…that made one of us.”
