Not even him.

Once he has his card back, he pockets it before tightening his grip on my hand. “Looks like we’re ready to roll.” The flinty look in his gray eyes conflicts with the lightness in his voice, which is all for show.

Time to start the fight of my life.

Chapter Four - Beckett

“Could you at least not hold on so tight? What, are you trying to tear my arm off?”

I force myself to ignore Olivia’s complaints as I pull her to the car. And there are plenty of them. She doesn’t quit as I hurry her down the sidewalk, then open the passenger door and bundle her inside.

I lean down, filling the doorframe. “If you so much as consider opening this door once I’ve closed it, unless I give you express permission, I will catch you and I will bring you back. Next time, a sore arm will seem like child’s play. You hear me?”

“So scary.” She slams herself into the seat, then folds her arms. “Fucking humiliating. But then I guess you’re here on Daddy’s orders.” I refuse to take the bait, closing the door and using every obscenity I know as I walk around to the driver’s side.

Strange. I remembered clearly what a little brat she could be. Even a bitch when she put her mind to it. But being in her presence is another story. I’m going to spend the entire drive home fighting the impulse to snap her fucking neck.

Or fuck her in every way imaginable. If only to show her who’s in charge.

“You know I’m just going to leave again. Right? You know that, don’t you?” Again, I ignore her, starting the engine and pulling away from the curb without saying a word.

She smells incredible. Her scent fills the car, so much so that I have to crack the window to vent it. With her pulse fluttering like it is, bursts of fragrance emanate from her with every beat of her heart. Hunger simmers low in my gut, my cock twitching even as she sets my teeth on edge with her incessant whining.

“You’re not taking me straight back, are you? We can’t do that. I have things back at my place.”

“You can get new things.”

“I have a computer. I really want that. And personal stuff.”

“Too bad. I was instructed to bring you back. Not your personal stuff.”

“You fucking prick. Looks like you haven’t changed.”

“But you have.” I glance her way at a red light. “Nice hair. And nice last name, for that matter. Your father won’t be happy to know you changed it.”

“It wasn’t a real name change, genius. But now that you mention it, that’s one of the things I want to get. All the fake paperwork I had to come up with to get an ID. I don’t want anybody getting their hands on that.”

Shit. If anyone ever used that paperwork to trace their way to her…

We stop at another light that only just turned red, meaning I have a minute to make up my mind. “You’ll have five minutes. No more. Anything you don’t let your hands on in those five minutes, you’re going to have to learn to live without. Got it?”

Her jaw works like she’s biting back something vicious, but she’s smart enough to nod. “Got it.” She points left, indicating the way back to her place, but then I’m already turning.

“Tell me you weren’t following me before this.”

“I wasn’t following you before this.”

“Now, tell me the truth.”

I offer a shrug. “Which is it you want to hear? That I wasn’t following you, or the truth?”

“That’s fucking sick, you know that?”

“How so, Princess?”

“Oh, can we please not start on that already? You know I’m not a Princess. It’s rude of you to say it.”

“Thanks for letting me know. I wouldn’t want to be rude.”
