And then I got it. He’d lost someone and he was skittish. I was seventeen when my dad died in a car accident, and I could barely leave the house for months. Danger seemed to lurk around every corner.

“No,” I agreed slowly. “Of course not. But I wish you’d trust me.” I wanted to get him back to lighthearted mode. “I was right about the potato, wasn’t I?

He squeezed my hand and nodded. “Yeah, okay. Let’s jump in a raging river then fly back across it on a laundry line.”

I jumped up and down like a six-year-old when he agreed. “If you think that’s raging, you’ve been in the city too long. And please don’t make me tell you the specs of my zip line.”

He shrugged out of his pack and pulled out a camera. “This little guy can go underwater. Might as well get some work done.” Raising the camera, he clicked a few shots in my direction, smiling down at the viewfinder. “You’re really pretty, Laurel.”

My cheeks heated up, especially while he looked at me appreciatively, his gaze lowering over my body, then rising up to meet my eyes again. I longed to have his hands run all over me like that and sighed. I was locked in his gaze and couldn’t look away, and I couldn’t find my voice to say thank you. He reached out and tugged me close to him again, our bodies flush together.

I tipped my chin up, breathless from wanting him so badly. My hands slid around his waist and my fingers curled in his t-shirt. Maybe staying on the ground was the best idea after all. His mouth met mine and I moaned softly when his tongue swept between my lips, gently parting them. I could feel how much he also wanted me and I pressed closer to him. Our kiss grew deeper and then he chuckled softly against my mouth, his hands running down my back to cup my ass.

“I told you this was better,” he murmured, his breath warm against my cheek as he kissed his way toward my earlobe.

I came to my senses a little, enough to pull away and catch my breath. “Nice try, gramps. I see what you’re up to.” He grinned and tried to kiss me again, but I twisted my head away. “I think you need to get in the cold water. Come on, I think this will be good for you.”

He let go of me and frowned, and I wondered if I’d screwed up my very last chance with him.
