I narrowed my eyes at her. “I’m not salty. I just don’t like these big city people trying to come into Riverroad. They mess up the whole…vibe of the town.”

Lily scoffed, “Sure, that’s what this is all about. You just don’t want her here ‘cause you still loooooovvvvee her.”

I lightly smacked my sister upside the head.

“Ow, dude, that hurt.”

“Then don’t say stupid shit.”

“It’s not stupid. It’s clear as day you never stopped loving the girl. You are just one sour idiot that holds a grudge for very long.”

I wanted to tell her off, but I held it in. I didn’t want to get into it with my sister over Jade. It wasn’t worth it.

“Now, I’m not saying that I like the girl ‘cause, I mean, she hurt you, but you still love the girl. Anyone with eyes can see that.” She gave me the side-eye. “But if you say you don’t love the girl, then that’s good. I think she has a boyfriend anyway. She was sitting with this guy in Pop Pop’s, and he was touching her like they were more than friends.”

My neck snapped around. “What guy?”

A knowing smile spread across my sister’s lips. “When I asked Ruth, she told me that he’s her colleague from New York. They are going to work on Ethan’s case together.”

So, she had a boyfriend, but she still slept with me? Real classy, Jade.

I wasn’t jealous. There was no need for me to be jealous. She could be with whoever she wanted. She wasn’t mine and I wasn’t hers. Whoever this guy was, he could have her. She wasn’t worth much to me anyway.

Those were the words I kept telling myself, but the red anger that brewed deep within me said otherwise.
