Chapter 1 - Lily: Time To Go

“Yes, Grayson!” Jade’s screams carried all the way downstairs.

It was six in the morning, and these two were going at it like rabbits again. Waking up to them having sex had become a normal occurrence. It had been two months of me living with my brother, and I still got pissed off.

No one wanted to be awakened from hearing their brother have sex.

I pulled the covers off my body and made my way down the stairs for some much-needed coffee. Living with Grayson was meant to be temporary. I still planned on moving out, but I just didn’t have a plan of action at the moment.

I sipped on my coffee as I scrolled through my phone. I had multiple messages from an unknown number, and I didn’t even bother opening them. I knew who they were from. It was Maximus, my ex-boyfriend, or should I say Max? He hated when people called him Maximus.

To say Maximus was a crappy ex-boyfriend would have been an understatement. The man was violent, volatile, and a complete psychopath. For two years, I had been under the delusion that what we shared was love but, a beating too many, I packed up my shit and left.

Well, I didn’t just leave. I may or may not have trashed his house and car before I left the premises, but he deserved it. After all he had put me through, he was lucky I didn’t set his bike on fire, too.

My phone buzzed, as a message from my mother came in again.

Birth Giver: Lillian, I think it’s time you move out of your brother’s house and come back home. I miss you.

I scoffed. Nora Stone was a class-act of a mother. Now, she missed me? What about all those years her back was turned on me, and her sole focus was her son? Where was she then? That’s right, nowhere at all.

I deleted her message and finished my coffee.

Jade’s laughter rang in my ears as she and my brother raced downstairs like little children. When they turned to come into the kitchen, they paused when they saw me sitting by the island.

Jade’s smile dropped ever so slightly. Bitch. I may have unknowingly pushed my brother in her direction, but I still didn’t like the girl. She had hidden her pregnancy from him and then proceeded to play the victim. Boohoo, your mommy did drugs and went psycho.

“Morning Lily,” she greeted me.

“You guys sound like you had a great morning,” I deadpanned. “Could you guys at least not be so loud? I swear you wake up the whole freaking neighborhood.”

Jade blushed and quickly got to making her coffee. My brother, on the other hand, had the most annoying little cocky smirk on his face. He winked at me and went up behind his girlfriend.

They were nauseatingly affectionate with one another. I had had the pleasure of walking in on them having sex more times than I cared to admit.

“Gray, stop,” Jade giggled, “I need to get ready for work.”

“I wouldn’t mind going for round three. You know, to help me get through the day.”

I felt the bile rise in my throat. There was never a universe where I would be comfortable hearing my brother talking about sex.

I got up from the chair and made my way out of the kitchen. I was almost to the stairs when Grayson called me. I turned around to see him leaning against the wall with his arms crossed over his chest.

“What?”

He cocked his eyebrow. “What’s got your panties in a twist?”

“Maybe the fact that I’m not getting any. Or maybe it’s the fact I have to listen to my brother fuck his girlfriend every day. Can’t you guys be a little more respectful or considerate? Some of us don’t like to wake up to the sound of cheeks clapping every morning.”

He ignored my question and nodded his head to the living room. He pushed off the wall and headed to it with me closely in tow. We settled onto the sofa, and I could already tell from the look on his face, I wasn’t going to like what he was about to say.

“What is it?” I asked nervously. “Did something happen to mom?”

I knew I had a strained relationship with my mother, but I wasn’t an ice queen. I cared about the woman. She had given me life. But there was just a lot of baggage in our past that needed unpacking.

“No, mom is fine. She actually said that she would be over tomorrow…”

“Well then, I will not be here tomorrow,” I interjected. There was no way my mother I and could be stuck in the same house for more than 30 minutes.
