“Ethan, I know you don’t want to talk about your sister or your family, and we won’t do that. But you have been so miserable to be around this week, and I know that it is not of your own doing. You are under a lot of pain and pressure, and you are still grieving your mother in the process. You need a break, Ethan. This little adventure to Amberbay will be good for you. I could also use the break. I can only take so much of this town before I lose my mind.”

Ethan stared at me with a passive look on his face. I had no idea if my little speech had worked or not.

“Fine.” He closed the file that he had been writing in. “Take me on this little adventure of yours.”

My lips curved into an elated smile.

“When do we leave?”

“Now.” I grabbed his keys that had been lying to his side. “I will see you in the car, boss.”

I heard the beginning of his protests, but I was already out the door before he could say anymore.

I packed up my things at the reception and by the time everything had been shut down and locked Ethan came out of his office too.

“Ready?” I beamed at him as he walked down the hall toward me.

“Yeah,” he grumbled which only caused me to smile more. “You aren’t driving my truck Lily. Give me the keys.”

“No can do. I am driving, and that is the end of the story.”

“Can you even drive a stick shift?”

I rolled my eyes. “I grew up on stick shifts. Now, come on. Let’s go to the truck.”

I walked out of practice feeling like I had just won the lottery. Ethan locked the practice and followed me begrudgingly. I opened his truck and put my bag in the back. I hopped into the driver’s seat after struggling to make it up in my pencil skirt. Ethan got in after me and buckled himself in.

I revved his engine to life. The sound of engine roaring was orgasmic. I had a thing for cars. I blamed the obsession on my crazy psycho ex-boyfriend.

I peeled out of the parking lot to the complex and made my way onto the road.

From my peripheral I could see Ethan staring out the window lost in thought. I was still shocked he had even allowed me to get this far, but it also meant that he realized that he needed the break.

I don’t know why I felt obligated to help Ethan. Maybe it was because I had a soft spot for him or maybe it was because I knew what it felt like. I knew what it felt like to have this pain that felt like it was never ending. I knew what it felt like to have a heavy heart.

“This is going to be fun.” I braved a look his way. He didn’t turn toward me. He didn’t even acknowledge that I had spoken.

It was going to be a long drive to Amberbay.
