When she heard me approaching, her neck snapped in my direction.

“Ready to go?”

She stared at me for a while. Her blue eyes searched for something on my face. Her expression was unreadable.

“Lily?”

She snapped out of whatever daze she had walked into. Her eyebrows furrowed before she nodded and hopped off the bed. She gathered her stuff and started for the door.

As she walked past me, I grabbed her by the elbow, halting her steps. She glared at me with so much fury, I was a little stunned.

“Are we okay?”

She plastered on a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Of course. Why wouldn’t we be okay? It’s not like we had mind-blowing sex multiple times last night. It’s not like I opened up a piece of myself last night that I had closed off for years. We are good, Ethan. There is no need to worry.”

My grip on her arm loosened, and she stepped back.

“Lily, we talked about this. We both agreed that what we did was to never leave this room.”

“Well, we are in this room now, so we might as well talk about it.”

“There is nothing to talk about, Lily. We had sex, and it’s done. It was great. I blew off some steam, and I feel better now. Mission accomplished. Well done.”

She winced at my words. The look in her eyes damn well nearly broke my heart. She shook her head at me, her blue eyes glazing over.

“Is that what last night felt like to you? A mission that was accomplished?”

No.

But I knew I couldn’t say that, so I remained silent. I took my silence as sparing us both the hurt. She took it as a dagger right to her heart.

“It wasn’t nothing, Ethan. You and I both know it wasn’t nothing. What we shared last night was more than just sex.” She turned on her heel and headed for the door. She stopped short and turned around to face him. “At least, I am woman enough to realize that. You are simply a coward who doesn’t know what he wants, so you always take the easy way out."

Her words were like bullets to my chest.

“I will wait for you downstairs.”

She opened the door and left me in the room alone.

“Fuck,” I cussed. “Just fucking great.”

How was I even going to begin cleaning up this mess?
