“Most of it,” she said. “Can I just say your mother is pure trash. I know she is your mother, but a spade is a spade.”

“The right thing would be to defend my mother, but you are right.”

“Has it always been like that between you two?”

I shook my head, “it only started after my dad died. My mom and I used to be pretty close.” A smile found its way to my lips as a memory I had long forgotten about came to my mind. “She used to call me her mini me. We would get matching outfits and we would have weekly mommy and me dates. We were as thick as thieves.”

“And then your dad died,” Maddison looked at me somberly.

“Then he died,” I sighed. It all went downhill after that.

Death had a tendency to do that. It usually made people draw closer to one another or grow further apart. In my case it was grow further apart with my mother and grow closer to my brother.

So far, I had gotten into with my mother, had an awkward encounter with my boss whom I had happened to sleep with not long ago and I was already starting to feel the effects of the liquor. We hadn’t even had the little finger foods my mom was preparing.

This was going to be an interesting thanks giving.

What a wonderful start to thanksgiving dinner.
