The first thing I noticed about the woman was that she was extremely gorgeous. The second thing was that she stood out like a sore thumb. She was from the city. Which city? That was still unknown. My best guess would be New York.

“My Louboutins,” she shrieked, “these were $800!”

“You paid 800 dollars for shoes? Are they even comfortable?”

She snapped her eyes to me with so much fury, I was sure her gaze would have melted me on site.

“I hate this bloody town,” I could hear the slight accent. She was definitely not from Riverroad.

I held her handbag out to her, and she snatched it from me angrily. She looked like she wanted to go on a rant but then she thought better of it and straightened. She closed her eyes and took a few deep breaths in and out.

When she was done, she opened her bright blue eyes and smiled at me.

“Okay. Let’s start over.” She extended her hand to me. “Hi, I’m Maddison.”

I looked at her hand for a moment before I took it in mine. Her skin felt soft. She probably had never done an ounce of hard scut work in her life.

“Lily, nice to meet you. You aren’t from around here, are you?”

“Yes and no?”

“What?”

She waved me off. “Nothing. Anyway, I need to go and get another coffee. I’m supposed to be heading to the airport in the next few hours, and I still haven’t found anyone for my house.”

“For your house?” I was nosy. Sue me.

“I need a house sitter.” She threw her platinum blonde hair over her shoulder. “I live in New York, but I have a house here. I do plan on moving back for a year but, before I can do that, I have some things I need to settle in New York first.”

I looked up to the heavens. Was this some heavenly sign from above? Had God just sent me mana?

I looked back at Maddison. “I can do it for you.”

She gave me a look that read ‘I don’t know you or trust you in my home'. This is where I needed to sell it. If this was a gift from the heavens, I was going to grab it with both hands.

“I’ve been looking for a place to stay, and you need a house sitter, well technically you need me to rent out your house but tomato, tomatoe. It’s all the same to me. I think this is a win-win situation. You find someone to rent the house and I have a place to live.

She thought it over for a moment. I could only hope that she would just take the chance on me. I was fresh out of options. I had no job. The least I could do was try and secure a place to live for the next month. I would figure the rest out later.

“Fine, rent is due at the end of the month. If you aren’t busy I can take you to the house now and you can get a view of the place. You will basically have it all to yourself, but I will randomly pop in now and again. So no parties, no strange people, and definitely no drugs.”

“Perfect.” My reply was instant.

“Just like that? You aren’t worried I may be a serial killer?”

I shrugged. “I’ve lived a long enough life.”

“What if I’m into human trafficking?”

I shrugged again. “Everyone needs a little spice in their lives.”

“Are you making a joke about human trafficking?”

“Nope.” I grinned. “It’s truly a global pandemic that doesn’t get enough attention.”

“Do you have a job?”

“Yep.” No, I didn’t.
