What the hell?

I wanted to rip my hand from his, but this was all a part of the plan.

“People would buy this more if you didn’t look like you were about to shit yourself, stink bug.”

I blinked and then cleared my throat. “I just wasn’t expecting it. Next time you need to warn me.”

“I’m going to lean over the table and kiss your cheek now. Is that enough warning?” he asked. I didn’t have time to tell him to stay back because he was already leaning forward and closing the distance.

Marcus pressed his lips against my skin, and everything stilled for a moment. I immediately became hyper-aware of his closeness. The fresh scent of his cologne, and the way his heat radiated into my space.

When he pulled back, I let go of the breath I hadn’t even known I had been holding. I looked around the café, suddenly unable to stare at Marcus. I noticed a few people giving us odd looks here and there.

Well, it looked like our plan was working. People were talking.

I turned back to face Marcus but, when I did, I noticed that his face looked pale, and his eyes were wide. He was staring at something behind me which caused me to turn in my seat and look at what he was staring at.

My eyes came in contact with a stunning woman who was at the entrance of the café. She had this fiery red hair that I was envious of. Her eyes were zeroed in on Marcus, but then they cut to me. At first, they were shocked and then they narrowed.

I turned back to Marcus who was still staring at the woman.

“Marcus.” I snapped my fingers in front of his face which snapped him out of whatever trance he was in. “Who is that, and why does she look like she wants to kill me?”

Marcus smiled at me. “Follow my lead and don’t say anything stupid.”

I opened my mouth to rip him a new one, but I was cut off by an overly sweet voice.

“Hey, M.” The woman from the door stared down at Marcus, completely ignoring me.

Marcus stared up at her with the same stupid smile on his face. “I wasn’t expecting you till a few more days, Ash.”

“I just couldn’t wait to move back, so I rushed the process.” This bitch had the audacity to reach out and touch Marcus’s arm.

I cleared my throat, grabbing both their attention.

“Sorry,” she giggled. “I didn’t see you there. I’m Ash, areallygood friend of Marcus’ and you are?”

The look in her eyes told me everything I needed to know about her. She was one of those mean girls that I had associated with high school. They had a big superiority complex and always thought that they were right about almost everything.

“Nice to meet you.” I smiled. “I’m Maddie, I’m Marcus’ fiancée.”
