“So then, why don’t you tell her that you don’t want her, you know; be a man about it.”

I opened my mouth but then I closed it. Now was not the time to unpack baggage from my past. Talking about Ash meant that I would need to talk about Sarah which was something I did not want to do.

I huffed and opened the door, so she could get in.

Maddison stared at me before she sighed and got into the car. I knew there was some smart-ass response on her tongue, but she had the common courtesy to shut up.

I was in no mood to go back and forth with her.

I closed the door, rounded the car, and got in. I revved the engine to life and peeled out of the parking lot.

Maddie was quiet the whole ride home which was unlike her. Usually, she was yapping and making her disdain of me known.

It felt like an hour before I finally came to a stop in front of her house. Without waiting for me to open her door, she exited my car. She stared at me, holding the door open.

“We will be traveling to my parents next weekend. I checked your schedule, and it matches up. And then from there, you can move in with me and then we start the wedding planning.”

She didn’t even wait for me to say anything. She just shut the door and walked up her driveway to her door. I watched her for a moment, wondering what the hell I had gotten myself into.

This whole idea had been crazy from the beginning, but I had been desperate, and desperation turned any man into a fool. Now I was reaping the fruits of what I had planted.

My phone buzzed, and I took it out of my pocket. There were four messages from four different people.

Danny: You’re getting married?! Who the hell did you knock up?

Mom: Linda messaged me congratulating me on your engagement. What the heck?

Ethan: Ash came by the practice looking for you in the morning. Did you know she was back in town?

Stink Bug: Where the hell did you go? I hope you didn't follow that bimbo

The ones from Ethan and Maddison were from a while ago, but the ones from my mom and Danny were recent. Ash had made quick work of informing her parents which meant that I was in deep shit. Operation damage control started now.

I started the engine and headed down the street toward my mother’s house. I had no idea how my mother was going to take this. I couldn’t tell her the truth because my mother couldn’t keep a secret to save her life.

Danny knew me like the back of her hand, and I was sure she would see right through me.

Great.
