“Something like that,” I whispered. “My dad isn’t really my dad. My parents told me a few months back that my real father was from here. He had died a few weeks or months ago when my mother finally decided to give me the letter he wrote me.

“I came back here hoping that maybe I would be able to find the parts of me that I felt were missing in my life. It’s stupid, I know, but I just thought maybe coming here would bring me some big enlightenment that I had been missing in my life. Or something.”

He stepped forward and brushed a loose strand of hair from my face, “It’s not stupid at all, Maddie. If anything, I think it’s kind of cool that you came back. I had missed your annoying ass; you left a small void when you left.” He cracked a boyish smile that had me wanting to roll my eyes.

His touch was warm and sent tingles shooting all over my body. I became incredibly aware of his presence. His scent invaded my nostrils. I wanted nothing more than to bottle up his scent and keep it stashed away just for my own personal use.

His blue-grey eyes pierced into mine, holding me in place. A gentle heat filled my core, as I stepped closer to him. My eyes moved from his down to his lips. His tongue darted out and licked his lips.

These were dangerous waters I was trying to play in. There were boundaries, and I had been very clear about them in my mind. But now those boundaries were blurring, and I was losing sight of the shoreline, but surprisingly, I didn’t care.

I don’t know who moved first, if it was him or me, but the next thing I knew, our lips were mere inches from one another. I could feel his hot breath fanning my face. He smelled like mint. Normally the smell would have repulsed me, but I found myself wanting to lean more into it.

My eyes fluttered closed, and the gap between us disappeared.
