My phone buzzed in my pocket, but I ignored it.

“Why don’t you run upstairs and get cleaned up, and I will clean down here. We can watch something on TV or something. Just have a little chill time.”

My phone buzzed yet again, but I ignored it.

“Are you sure you don’t have plans? I wouldn’t want to intrude on your schedule. This is probably your day off.”

Then I remembered the family dinner. Crap.

“Actually, I think you can join me. How do you feel about having dinner with me and the fam?”

“Are you sure that would be okay with Margret?”

I frowned. “Who?”

“Your fiancée. What’s her name again? Mary? Marjorie?”

“It’s Maddison, but you can call her Maddie, and she will be cool about it. Besides, you are part of my family, too, Ash. I know I haven’t shown it as much as I should have but you are.”

That made her smile.

“Okay.” She dropped my hands and turned to go. “I will go and get ready.”

You see, the problem with men is that sometimes we have the best intentions but, just because one had good intentions, doesn’t mean that it was the right thing to do. Inviting Ash to the dinner had been a nice thing to do but it wasn’t the right thing to do, and I knew this decision was going to come and bite me in the ass.

Note to self—don’t be a dumb man next time.
