Lost in my own thoughts, I look up to see Ava smiling at me, hopeful and encouraging, and I give her a smile of my own, but I know it doesn’t reach my eyes, when my phone suddenly chirps.

I look down and see Riley’s name staring back at me with a text that reads:

How’s lunch with Ava?

I furrow my brow, feeling Ava’s eyes on me when she asks, “Is everything okay?”

I blink, tearing my gaze from the phone. “Yeah, it’s just Riley.”

“You guys are getting close, huh?”

I see my friends twinkle in her eyes, and I almost laugh. “It’s not like that.”Unfortunately, I think to myself, but don’t say out loud.

Ava looks doubtful, and I just shrug. “Look, I thought we had a moment, but he obviously didn’t feel the same way.”

“What happened?”

I shift in my seat, suddenly feeling uncomfortable. “We danced.”

She furrows her brows in confusion as she cocks her head at me. “You danced? I’m sorry, I’m gonna need you to explain.”

I sigh. “We were in the kitchen one night, music was playing, and he asked me to dance. So we danced. And for a moment”—I pause, thinking back to that moment and shaking my head—“I thought he was going to kiss me.”

“But he didn’t?”

“We got interrupted, then later I thought he might talk about it, but he just said he was tired and practically ran from the room.”

Ava winces at that. “Maybe he was actually tired.” I give her a look, and she rolls her eyes. “Well, did you try mentioning it later?”

I look down at my mug, shaking my head, seeing her point, but I feel like his position on it is clear. If he wanted me, he would’ve tried something since, but he hasn’t. Maybe he only sees me as a friend.

Maybe I really have been friend-zoned. I shouldn’t be disappointed, but I am. When did that start happening?

Ava sighs. “I think you need to talk to him.”

“And what if something does happen? He’s Conner’s brother and my roommate. We work together! What if something happens and it doesn’t work out.”

She levels me with a knowing look. “What if itdoeswork out?”

Honestly, I didn’t think about that possibility. Relationships are not usually long term with me. Mostly because I've never found anyone that didn’t piss me off or that I wanted to have around, or one that wanted me for me, not just my parents’ money.

My mind spins at the possibility, then my phone chimes again from Riley:

?

I quickly reply back,feeling Ava’s smile.

It’s good.

He replies a second later, obviously waiting for me.

I’m coming to get you. Don’t rush, I’ll just wait outside, but I wanna take you somewhere.

Me: Where?

Riley: It’s a surprise.

Me: You going to kill me?
