I look down at my bags, not wanting to unpack them yet, desperately needing fresh air and space. I cast a glance over my shoulder at the water through the glass wall before looking back at Mia. “I might try out the lake. Go for a swim.”

“Sounds like fun,” she says with a smile that doesn’t meet her eyes, and I know for certain that this trip is going to be awkward. How much awkward can we take before one of us snaps? Before I tell her to get on the bed and spread her legs for me? Before I tell her how I want more and need more than just her friendship.

I didn’t want this to be awkward, but it feels more awkward not to do anything. With a nod, she turns on her heel and retreats down the hall, leaving me with the ball in my court.

CHAPTER 40

MIA

Yeah, this vacation is going to be hell.

After unpacking my things, I go in search for Riley until I remember that he said something about checking out the lake. So against better judgement, I pull on my red bikini, which pushes my boobs up to make them look a bit bigger and make my way out to the lake.

I look around, my bag on my shoulder holding a book and my phone, along with a towel, seeing nothing but still water. I furrow my brow, wondering where Riley has run off to, thinking maybe he went somewhere else or has gone exploring.

I try to swallow the tinge of worry and make my way out to the dock on the other side of the lake. Once there, I lay out my towel, when I suddenly hear my phone ring. Searching my bag, I pull my phone out and see Ava’s name blinking up at me.

Rolling my eyes at her abandonment, I answer while plopping myself down on the dock on top of my towel.

“Nice of you to call,” I comment as I lay back on the towel, staring up at the blue sky, submerging myself in the beauty and peacefulness of it all, when Ava scoffs.

“Hey, I sent you a text. It’s not my fault that you don’t check your phone.”

I roll my eyes again, grumbling at her logic, when she chuckles at my silence, knowing that she is right.

“So how are things there? Hot and heavy or dull and awkward.”

Gritting my teeth, I look around before answering, “Door number 2.”

“Would you prefer door number 1?”

I narrow my eyes at the phone before snapping, “Shut up.”

She laughs into the phone, which only increases my irritation. “You guys seriously need to sit down and sort out your shit.”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s obvious he wants you, so why not make a move? You’ve never been too scared to make a move before.”

I sigh. “This is different. I’m living with this guy, and I know you say he wants me, but if he wanted me, he would have done something by now. I haven’t exactly been subtle.”

Ava sighs. “Mia, this is a guy. He’s not gonna connect the dots until you sit on his face.”

I almost choke on my own breath at hearing Ava say such words. “Nice image.”

“Mia, if he is not gonna be the one to make the first move, you have to, and if he rejects you for some reason, then you will deal with that. But I can guarantee that if you were to tease him a little, he’d be on his knees, begging for you.”

I bite my lip, liking the idea of Riley on his knees begging a little too much, before shaking that thought away and saving it for later. “He’s not exactly the begging kind.”

She laughs. “That’s why you make him one.”

I process her words, feeling a mix of anticipation, excitement and fear, letting the emotions wash over me as ideas start popping into my mind, until I suddenly hear a familiar voice behind me.

“Who’s not the begging kind?” My eyes spring wide open in panic, quickly hanging up as I sit up and see Riley dripping wet from the lake with his wet hair pushed back off his face, droplets rolling down his chest, his abs, and into his shorts. I lick my lips, wishing my tongue could follow the path of the droplets, to see what he was hiding underneath those shorts.

Feeling his eyes on me, I wonder how much he heard, but choose to play dumb, hoping he only heard the end of the conversation. My cheeks start to heat up, and I pick at my towel beneath me as I say, “No one you know.”

He frowns, crossing his arms over his chest, and I watch as the visible muscles start to ripple. His voice darkens as he asks, “A guy you’re interested in?”
