“Just a feeling. Is the DEA in place?” Gavin said and tapped on his own phone.

“Yeah, they’re running leads on known drug routes.”

Rachel, her nerves frayed. “And nobody thought to explain this to me?”

Surprised, Gavin glanced up. “Sorry. It was a spur of the moment thing when we were planning the news conference remarks.”

“So, youarea speechwriter?" She said, amazed.

He laughed, his head thrown back and his eyes closed. After he calmed down and apologized again, he said, “Just for this one time. We wanted to send the drug ring a message.”

“Believe me,” the Senator said. “It was the result of throwing a lot of mud against the wall.”

She nodded, still affronted she hadn’t been involved in the conversation.

Minutes passed as they waited for any reaction from the drug ring. Finally, the Senator said, “I want to get out of here. Let’s go to the house.”

“Don’t you have meetings this afternoon?” Gavin said as they prepared to leave.

"I had them canceled. Figured nothing would get done today, what with the conference."

“What about the news programs? Aren’t they going to want to interview you?”

He shrugged, "I've asked Wayne to cover it for today. I'll agree to speak tomorrow, but for now, I want our team to work on this."

As they headed for the stairs, Rachel realized he considered them, Gavin, her and the Brotherhood members, his team. Not the staff from his state, not his Washington staff, but them.

The parking lot was full of cars, but Gavin navigated the SUV easily through it. “I’m taking the back roads, if that’s okay with you,” he said and turned onto a residential street.

“No, take the interstate,” Mitchell said. “It’ll take an extra half hour by the back roads and I want to be available if we’re needed.”

Rachel saw that Gavin wasn’t happy, but he did as asked and negotiated to the interstate. Bear had been asked to stay at the house with Mrs. Finch and Dallas and Vince had been given the task of securing the property.

“Have you talked with Sierra?” Rachel asked and the Senator nodded.

“She and Clay are in Canada. She’s aware of what’s going on. I had to talk to Clay in fact.”

“Why?”

“She wanted to come back.” He shook his head. “She’s more like me than I thought.”

They were silent as the drive went on. Rachel eyed the traffic around them and noticed after a short time they were being hemmed in. “Gavin?”

“I know,” he gritted out and she knew taking the interstate had been a very big mistake.

Gavin cursedand tried to change lanes. The truck in front of them was slowing, not so much as to be noticed by other drivers, but enough that he couldn’t maneuver. He looked in the rearview at the SUV riding his bumper. There were two vehicles to each side of him, hemming them in. "You got your weapon?" he asked and started trying to scoot over to the right.

“Yes,” her voice, calm and even, reassured him she wouldn’t panic.

“What’s going on?” the Senator asked then glanced out of the window. “They’re surrounding us?”

“Yes sir. We’ll probably be taking the next exit,” Gavin spit out.

“And I wanted you to take the interstate,” Mitchell grunted.

"It probably wouldn't have mattered," Rachel said, glancing to the left. "I have a feeling at least one of them was following us from the start."

They watched as an exit came into view and the clumped cars moved off the road. Rachel called 911 in the interim, reporting the incident, though Gavin figured they’d be long gone when the police showed up.
