Her red head whips around and soft curls dance by her red cheeks. Her mouth falls open. “Why on earth do you need me?”

“So Liam doesn’t go ballistic that a guy is looking at Candy.”

“I’m sure you’ll be fine.” She inches closer to the door. “I’m off for the weekend.”

“You know the job as well as I do. Sometimes you have to work late.”

“Not tonight. I really have to go. I’ve got an appointment,” her husky voice pleads.

“What is it?”

“Ummm.” Her eyes practically cross trying to think of something. If I didn’t want to get out of this almost as much as she does, I might be insulted.

“Let’s go. We’ll take my truck.” I stride out the door and hit the front door with no footsteps behind me. I turn and lift an eyebrow to her. “Hello? Let’s go.”

She mutters something under her breath and I’m tempted to ask her but I let it slide. I don’t want to get into some in-depth discussion with her about her feelings or anything else. I just want to get done and go home.

“Nurse Jones? Let’s go.”

With another muttered swear word, she stalks past me where I’m holding open the door.

I shut and lock the door and sigh, eyeing her slight figure standing in front of my truck, tapping her foot.

This is going to be an awful trip. But if a patient needs you, you go.

I unlock the doors and let her in, starting the truck and watching her buckle the seatbelt, her eyes fixed on her hands. She never looks at me again and I put the truck in gear and drive off, slow and steady. I hear a huff and see her eyes roll.

“Is there a problem?” I ask.

“Nope. Just want to get this over with. It’s been a very long week,” she grunts.

“You have no idea,” I growl. Her green eyes slew to mine and she eyes me critically.

But she doesn’t say another word for the whole half an hour drive. It’s a relief when we pull into Liam’s driveway.

“I see the tree’s been moved.”

She grunts and starts to open the door. “Hang on, I’ll help you. It’s a helluva drop.”

She ignores me and basically throws herself out the damn door, stumbling and swearing when she hits the ground hard.

I shake my head. “Really?”

She stomps up the porch, limping slightly. She knocks on the door and I stand next to her waiting patiently. I can’t resist harassing her though.

“I told you to let me help you.”

Her face flares red but she refuses to even look at me.

Liam rips the door open. “Oh good. You’re here. Let’s get this over with so I can get my plans for my wedding going.”

Poppy’s mouth drops open. “Seriously? You talked a woman into marrying you, Liam? I find that hard to believe.”

He growls and eyes her angrily and I feel an instant kinship with the man. She seems to take great delight into getting under both of our skins.

After fifty minutes of questions and satisfactory answers I close my bag and stand. “Seems good. I think you are free to do whatever you need to do, Candy.”

Both of them nod and Liam leads us out. “Thank you. I just wanted to make sure that she was alright for the wedding.”
