“Okay. But I have a lot to do tomorrow, so maybe you could go downstairs and watch TV or something.”

“You want to have sex?” I suggested instead.

“Now? Really? Maybe if you’d asked me an hour ago…”

“It’s just that, you know, I’m the one who pushed for my dad to hire her.”

“Jodi…”

“And she seemed so perfect. She came with these glowing references…” I stopped abruptly.

“What?” he asked.

“Her references.”

“What about them?”

“What if they were fake?”

“Didn’t you check them before you hired her?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“They were fantastic.”

“Okay. I’m going to sleep now.”

“I’m going to call them again.” I threw the covers off, scrambling to get out of bed.

“What? Jodi, it’s after midnight.”

“Oh. Right. Okay, then. First thing tomorrow.” I walked toward the bedroom door.

“So, where are you going?”

“To find her reference letter.”

“Now? Can’t it wait?”

“No. I don’t want to waste time tomorrow searching for it.”

“Okay. Do what you want. Just try not to wake me when you come back up.”

“Fine,” I said, leaving the room and padding down the stairs on my bare feet.

I flipped on the light in the kitchen, proceeding to the drawerwhere I kept miscellaneous items, and upending its entire contents across the dining room table. I spent the next hour unfolding each piece of stray paper, most of which contained nothing but unaccompanied phone numbers, and most of which I ended up tossing in the bin for recycling. There were also at least a half dozen old menus from Pizza Nova as well as some from several Japanese restaurants and the New Yorker Deli, places I couldn’t even remember visiting. These were mixed in among instruction booklets for how to operate various appliances, including an espresso maker I’d thrown out years ago. “Lovely,” I said, about to give up my search when I saw it—the single piece of lavender notepaper that was Elyse’s list of references.

“Jodi,” Harrison called quietly from the bottom of the stairs.

I jumped. “Shit. You scared me.”

“You’re scaringme,” he countered. “It’s after two o’clock.”

“It is? I guess I lost track of the time.”

“Did you find it?”
