“And?”

“And you and your lovely sister will do nothing to upset that. You won’t bad-mouth her or question her decisions. You won’t go seeking any more unsolicited legal advice. You won’t interfere with her plans. You will be agreeable and supportive and, well, just as sweet as I know you can be.”

“And if I’m not?”

“Let me show you something.” He pulled his phone from the pocket of his navy blazer and stretched it toward me.

I stared at its small screen, saw a picture of me sleeping soundly in a bed I didn’t recognize. The picture morphed into a video, and I watched as the camera panned a room I now recognized as the room I’d shared with Roger at the King Eddy Hotel. The camera moved slowly from my clothes, thrown over a nearby chair, to the mirror on the back of the bathroom door, my lover’s naked body on prominent display in the full-length glass.

“Oh, God,” I moaned.

“I know,” he said. “Not my best angle. On the bright side, youlook very content. A good orgasm does wonders for a woman’s complexion, don’t you think?”

“You bastard!”

“I think we can do without the name-calling. Andrew’s good enough. And don’t worry. I have no intention of showing this to anyone, especially your husband who, I assume, wouldn’t be too thrilled with that post-orgasmic glow.”

“So, this whole thing was a setup? You used me…”

“I prefer to think we used each other. Any more questions?”

“Elyse’s references…?”

“Both me. Different voices, throwaway phones. Pretty amateur stuff. But it’s easy to fool people when they want to be fooled.”

My head was spinning. Is this allmyfault?“So, what happens now?”

He smiled. “Now we make like good little stepbrother and sister, and rejoin the party. What do you say, sis?”

“I say go to hell.”

The smile disappeared. “You first.”

Don’t worry, I thought as I rejoined the others. I’m already there.
