“Anything.”

“Follow me.” She led me down the stairs to the lower level.

“Hi, kids,” I said, waving to them as we passed the home theater.

Sam waved back without looking.

“Hi, Mommy! We’re watching cartoons!” Daphne shouted.

“I changed them into the clothes you left, and their wet bathing suits are in this bag,” Elyse said, handing the plastic bag to me as we reached the room that was soon to be hers.

“Is everything okay with the room?” I asked as she walked toward the nightstand beside the queen-size bed. The door tothe small en suite bathroom was open and I could see her toiletries already lining the counter by the sink.

“Couldn’t be better. Now, if you wouldn’t mind…” She walked back toward me, cradling a book in her hands. “It’s your husband’s novel. I was so lucky to find it. They only had one copy. Do you think he’d mind autographing it for me?”

“He’d be thrilled,” I said honestly.

“You’re sure? I wouldn’t want to bother him.”

“Trust me. It’s no bother.”

She handed me the book. “That would be so wonderful. I’d be so grateful.”

“It’s the least I can do.”

We heard my mother cough from the intercom beside the bed.

“I should check on her,” I said.

“Why don’t I go with you?” she offered immediately.

Please let her be happy here. Please let her stay,I was wishing as I drove home, the kids chattering happily in the backseat.

Be careful what you wish for,the gods whispered back.

But I was too busy congratulating myself on my good fortune to hear them.
