“And we thought we’d stop in to say hello,” Tracy added. “See how you were doing.”

“I’m doing just fine. Or Iwas, till you woke me up.”

“I tried to tell them,” Elyse said.

“Do you mind if we have a few minutes alone with our father?” I asked.

“I’m afraid Idomind,” Elyse said. “As you can see, your father doesn’t respond well to surprise visits.”

“Dad?”

“You heard Elyse. You’re being very rude.”

“Excuse me,” one of the workers called from downstairs. “Mrs. Dundas? Could I speak to you for a second?”

Elyse hesitated.

“Go ahead,” I told her. “We aren’t going anywhere.”

“I’ll only be a second,” Elyse told our father. “Don’t do anything to upset your father,” she said, her eyes boring into mine, issuing a silent warning.

“What’s happening, Dad?” I asked the second she was gone.

“I don’t understand.”

“Did you call my house last night?”

“Did I?” His eyes searched the room, as if struggling to remember.

We were wasting precious time. Elyse would be back any second. I had no choice but to dive right in. “I understand Elyse took you to see a new lawyer, that she’s pestering you to change your will and give her power of attorney.”

“What?!” Tracy asked. “Where did you hear that?”

I waved her questions aside. “Dad, listen to me. It’s important that you find a way to delay signing anything…”

“Why would I do that?” he asked, running an agitated handthrough his uncombed hair, his eyes fighting to focus. “What are you trying to tell me?”

“We think Elyse might be drugging you, that you might be in danger,” I told him as I heard Elyse’s footsteps bound up the stairs. “We need you to call the police.”

“The police?!”

“Everything all right in here?” Elyse asked, entering the room, eyes ricocheting between my father, Tracy, and me.

“Right as rain,” Tracy said.

“Glad to hear it,” Elyse said. “Now, if you don’t mind, I think it’s time for you girls to leave and let your father get some rest.”

“What doyouthink, Dad?” I asked.

He looked from Tracy to me to Elyse, then back to me. “I think you should leave,” he said.
