“How many times have I told these kids my office is out-of-bounds, that they’re never to go near my computer?”

“We didn’t!” Sam shook his head with such ferocity that his tears sprayed into the air like errant drops of rain. “I swear.”

“Stop,” I told Harrison as he descended the steps. “Just calm down.”

“Don’t tell me to calm down.”

“Then tell me why you think Sam had anything to do with your missing emails?”

“Who else could it be?”

“We were playing in my room,” Sam said. “We never went into your office.”

“We were in Sam’s room,” Daphne repeated.

“Stop lying for your brother,” Harrison warned.

“We’re not lying,” Sam insisted. “Please, Mommy. We’re not lying.”

“It’s okay, sweetheart.”

“It’s not okay!” Harrison snapped. “Don’t tell him it’s okay.”

“I didn’t touch Daddy’s computer,” Sam insisted.

“I know, sweetheart.”

“Stop defending him,” Harrison ordered.

“He didn’t touch your fucking computer!” I shouted. “He didn’t erase your fucking emails!”

Daphne gasped. “Mommy said a bad word!”

“How the hell would you know that?” Harrison demanded.

I pushed my shoulders back, stared my husband right in the eyes. “Because I did!”
