“But?”

“I’m just concerned that…well, he’s still a relatively attractive man and he’s always had a very healthy ego. He likes to…how can I say this?”

“Flirt?” Elyse said for me.

“Yes,” I acknowledged. I chose my next words very carefully. “He’s from a different generation. He doesn’t understand that what was once considered acceptable behavior justisn’tanymore, and I wouldn’t want you to take offense.”Or quit,I was thinking. “Like if he makes a suggestive remark or touches you in a way you consider inappropriate. You don’t have to put up with it. You just have to tell him to cut it out…”

She laughed, her eyes sparkling. “Oh, Jodi. You can stop worrying. It takes a whole lot more than that to offend me. That’s the problem withyourgeneration, if you don’t mind my saying. You’re all so easily offended. Such a waste of energy.”

“So…everything’s okay?”

“Couldn’t be better. And to be honest, I like to flirt a bit myself. It’s fun.” She winked. “Maybe you should give it a try.”

Yeah, right,I thought, watching her slip the water wings ontomy daughter’s arms with the same ease with which she handled everything else.

I doubted that Harrison would be receptive to any attempt at flirting on my part. And the truth was that flirting wasn’t exactly my strong suit. I’d always been too direct, too straightforward, to be a successful flirt, which usually involved an innate cunning I lacked.

I slipped off my cover-up and settled into the chaise longue, watching Elyse frolic in the water with my children.

And to be honest, she’d said,I like to flirt a bit myself.

I confess that, at the time, I found her admission charming. Now I realize that it was one of the few honest things she ever said.
