“I’m worried that Elyse might be stealing from my mother,” Isaid to his closed eyes. I told him of finding my mother’s blouse and earrings in Elyse’s room.

“Have you told your father your concerns?” Harrison asked, one eye opening.

“No.”

“Don’t you think you should?”

I nodded. Suddenly, it seemed so clear. “Thank you.”

“Anytime. Now, get some sleep.” He flipped onto his other side. “Good night, hon. See you in the morning.”

“I love you,” I whispered, waiting for him to say it back.

I fell asleep waiting.
