“Suppose you let me worry about that.”

“You shouldn’t have to worry at all. You could sell the house, make a huge profit, buy a condo or move into a first-class retirement community. You wouldn’t need a housekeeper…”

“Aha!” he said. “So that’s what this is about, getting rid of Elyse.”

“I just meant—”

“I know what you meant. Thank you for dropping by.” He turned and walked toward the front hall.

I sat for several seconds without moving before gathering up my coat and scrambling to my feet. “What do you want me to tell Stephanie?” I asked when I reached the front door.

“Tell her whatever the hell you’d like,” he said, opening the door before I had the chance to put on my coat. He swiveled toward the kitchen, where Elyse stood, watching and waiting. “I’ll have that hot chocolate now,” he told her.

“Coming right up,” she said with a smile. “Nice seeing you again, Jodi. If you wouldn’t mind closing the door after you…”

I nodded. What else could I do? I tossed my coat over my shoulders and stepped out into the cold. I closed the door afterme.
