Chapter 24

“What did ye say?” Morag blinked away the tears as Bedivere stood up and dropped her hand.

“I am not good enough for you,” said Bedivere. “You certainly deserve someone other than an assassin for your husband.”

“B-but I want ye, Bedivere. Ye are no’ an assassin. Ye did those things to save yer family.”

“Morag, I want you more than you know.” Bedivere looked back to Whitmore’s body lying on the ground. “However, I let my anger take hold of me. I just killed a man who didn’t need to die.”

“I’m no’ so sure I agree with that,” said Reed.

“How do you think King Richard is going to react to someone murdering his advisor?” asked Branton.

“It wasna murder, Branton,” said Morag. “Bedivere did it to save me.”

“We’ll do what we can to help by telling the king the truth,” said Rowen.

“Aye, mayhap that will help his verdict.” Bedivere didn’t sound as if he believed it.

“Verdict? What do ye mean?” asked Morag.

“He might be sentenced to death for this,” said Branton.

“Nay.” Morag shook her head. “Richard wouldna do that.”

“Hopefully not,” said Rook. “After all, we can attest to the fact that Bedivere stopped eleven men who were plotting against him.”

“If he listens to us,” said Reed. “Richard never liked us and ye all ken it.”

“If he doesna listen to ye then mayhap he’ll listen to me. After all, I am his cousin,” Morag reminded them.

“Nay, Morag. Don’t get involved,” begged Bedivere. “This is my battle, not yours. If Richard won’t pardon me, you don’t need him to be angry with you as well.”

“Bedivere Hamilton, for bein’ such a brave man, sometimes ye can act so stupid,” remarked Morag.

“Stupid?” Bedivere shook his head. “Don’t you realize I am trying to save you from being a young widow if the king orders my execution? Morag, I am only trying to protect you and keep you from being hurt.”

“Execution? Nay, Richard wouldna do that. Would he, Da?”

“I’m no’ sure, Morag,” answered Reed softly. “I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens.”

“Well, I dinna care.” Morag lifted her chin and looked everyone there in the eye.

“You don’t care what happens to me?” Bedivere sounded very disappointed.

“That’s no’ what I mean.” Morag felt confident for the first time in her life. “What I mean is that I dinna care what happens to me. I love ye, Bedivere and I want to marry ye now, and no’ wait. No matter what the consequences of yer actions.”

“Morag, think what you’re saying.” Bedivere took her hands in his. “If I am convicted and sentenced to die for my past ways, I don’t want my wife to have to watch that.”

“I would be there no matter if I am yer wife or no’ so stop tryin’ to protect me because ye are only hurtin’ me instead.”

“Do you really feel that way?” asked Bedivere.

“I do.”

“And knowing what I did and the demons in my head that will be haunting me for the rest of my life, not to mention all the wagging tongues – you still want me as your husband?”

“Because of those demons that might haunt ye, and all the waggin’ tongues, I want to be at yer side even more. I will be there every step of the way to help ye get through this.”
