“I ran away,” she said.

“You did?”

“After I yelled at my dad.”

“Did he deserve it?”

“He did.” Her eyes opened, and I didn’t pretend I hadn’t been looking at her. “My mom has hypothermia. He found her in the bathtub this morning, but she’d been in there for hours and hours. My father worked all day yesterday and into the night, and he was so tired, he didn’t even notice his wife wasn’t in their bed.”

The level of calm she exuded worried me. Elena wasn’t calm by nature, and from what she was saying, she should have been raging up a storm. But she was almost placid as she sat beside me.

“Yeah, he deserved it,” I said.

“That’s not why I yelled.” She huffed a short laugh. “Would you believe my father tried to blameme? He said if I’d gone to visit her yesterday, this wouldn’t have happened. He said if I spent more time with my mother, she would be happier. This man makes million-dollar real estate deals and he isthatobtuse. He tried to blame me for his nearly catatonic wife—the one he ignores like it’s his job.”

“What the fuck?” I bit out.

“I’ve never yelled at my father before.” The corners of her mouth tipped.

“Did it feel good?”

“Great. He’s going to be mad, but I don’t care right now. He needed to hear it, and I refuse to accept the blame this time. That’s on him.”

She turned her head, sweeping over me with her tired gaze. “I think I might yell at you next.”

If she needed to yell, I’d take it. I told her I’d be her friend, so it was time for me to stand by my word.

Even if it hurt.
