Her eyebrows shot up. “Oh, do tell…”

I smacked her ass. “Dirty girl. This particular fantasy involves us riding around the ranch together.”

She snuggled in closer, sighing, and it was so fucking nice. If she could read my mind, see my level of contentment now that I truly had her back, she’d never doubt me again. Since she couldn’t, I’d gladly keep showing her.

“We should spend the summer there,” I said.

She tipped her head back, frowning. “Are you really trying to make plans with me for next summer? Really?”

“We’ll be together. I want you with me. Always. So why not?”

Her next breath was shaky, but her frown melted away. “I think it’s going to take me a while to be convinced you mean that. I love you, Lachlan, and I want that too, but I don’t quite know how to be loved this way.”

I slowly stroked her back as I listened and held her close. “Do you trust me?”

“I do. I trust you.”

“Then trust that I’ll be solid for you, even when you’re shaky. Trust that we’ve got time, and I’ll get you to a place where you don’t have to second-guess my promises. Trust that I’m not going anywhere, no matter how long it takes. I’ve got you, Ellie.”

She nuzzled into my throat, touching her lips to my Adam’s apple. Her silky hair brushed the underside of my chin as she nodded.

“Lachlan,” she sighed. I held my breath, waiting for her answer. “Okay. Let’s do this thing.”

My next breath was the sweetest I’d ever taken. The following one, even sweeter still. Elena was in my veins, my lungs, my head, my heart. Whether she was venom or the antidote, I didn’t care, not when she was in my arms, sliding into sleep. Elena was my sweet, my poison, my fantasy, my beautiful reality. She was everything I didn’t think I wanted, and more than I could have asked for. I knew what walking away from her was like, and that would never happen again.

As I’d told her a hundred times and would keep telling her until she believed it, I wasn’t going anywhere.
