Pressing on my hardening cock, I locked eyes with her. She had her hair draped over one shoulder, somehow tamedin the short time since she’d gotten out of bed.

“I’ll bring it back tonight.” She plucked at the hem of the shirt, and I was tempted to agree. Really fucking tempted.

“Don’t worry about it. If you want to return it, just leave it in my truck bed. I’ll get it.”

“In your truck bed?”

“Yeah. Everyone’s coming back today. I don’t think either of us want to answer questions about why you have my shirt.”

Her fingers dug into the ends of her hair. “Questions would be terrible. Though it’s not anyone’s business.”

She was saying the right things, but something was off. I didn’t know her well, but even I could see that.

“We’re on the same page, then?”

Her forehead was taut and smooth. When her eyebrows drew together, it barely crinkled. “What page are we on?”

“That this is done.”

She took a retreating step. “Done?”

Her surprise took me aback. We hadn’t said we were just hooking up temporarily, but it had been so clear in my head, I didn’t even question if it was clear in hers too.

“Done. I’ve got a lot going on. I had fun with you, but don’t—”

She ripped my T-shirt off her body and tossed it at me. “Here. Take your shirt. Our friends might talk if they see it in my possession, even for a minute. I wouldn’t want that.” Calm and level, she walked to my door, opening it carefully.

“Elena—”

Peering over her shoulder, she arched an imperious brow. “Yes?”

I had nothing to say. I didn’t owe her anything. We weren’t ending a relationship. We’d had some really fucking amazing sex, but that was where it started and ended. That was where it always ended for me. I had a hard time believing the ice queen would ever want anything more from me anyway. Something about this didn’t feel right, but it wasn’t because it was ending. Maybe I was doing it wrong. I hadn’t really anticipated needing to do it in the first place.

“Wear my fucking shirt.” I stalked across the room and tugged the cotton material over her head. “Throw it in the garbage when you get home if you want. I’m not letting you walk out of here without it on.”

Her long fingers pinched the material at her shoulder. “Thanks, Lachlan. I’ll leave it in your truck. And I guess we’re even now.”

I followed her into the hall, my toes at her heels as she headed toward the stairs. “What does that mean?”

“You built my deck, I sat on your dick a few times.” At the bottom of the steps, she used the balustrade to spin herself around. “I think we both got a pretty good deal out of this.”

She tossed her hair behind her shoulders and sauntered out of my house like she didn’t have a care in the world. And maybe she didn’t. Maybe that was all real and she wasn’t going to bite my head off the next time we ran into each other.

Despite being unsettled, I had no regrets. She was right. We had fun. We both got something out of the past week, and now it was done. If Elena iced me out after this, we’d be right back to where we began. No harm done.
