His huff was low and humorless. “I didn’t think I had to explain what it was. That was my mistake.”

“I’m not some desperate chick begging you to love me, Lachlan. I was never going to turn into that girl. Not with you. But the fact is, you didn’t use a condom with me, so I need to know how often you do this kind of thing. Should I be concerned?”

“Not with me,” he muttered, repeating my words.

“Oh, don’t be insulted because you’re not my type. I’m obviously not your type either.”

His hands tightened on the wheel. “You don’t need to be concerned.”

“Why not?”

“I always wear a condom. I don’t know why I didn’t with you. That was also a mistake. But you don’t need to be concerned.”

The truck inched forward in traffic. My head was pulsing. This conversation annoyed me. So, I unbuckled my seat belt, unlocked my door, and started to open it. Lachlan stretched across the truck, slamming the lock down.

“What the hell are you doing?” he barked lowly.

“I would have been home by now if you hadn’t stuffed me into this heap of a truck.”

“Heap of a truck,” he muttered. “The traffic is clearing. I’ll have you home in a few minutes. You’re not jumping into traffic because your ego is bruised.”

“My ego?” I snarled.

He buckled me back in one-handed. “Yeah, Elsa, your ego. You’re not interested in me. The only reason you’re mad is because I was the one who walked away, not you. If it makes your pride feel better, you can insult my truck, my personality, everything about me. That bounces off me. But I’m not going to let you hurt yourself out of spite—especially not when you’re already hurt.”

“Okay, Lachlan. If it makes you feel better to play the hero, I’ll sit here like a good girl. We’re not having a repeat of this on Thursday, though.”

“I know.”

Surprised he didn’t argue with me, I sighed and turned toward the window. “Swell.”

“I’m working Thursday, so I can’t drive you home. I’ll drive you after Tuesday classes.”

“You’ll have to kidnap me.”

He worked his hands on the steering wheel, squeezing and sliding like he was trying to reshape it. “Don’t be difficult for the sake of it.”

I’d never been one to back down from an argument, but my head was killing me, and something told me Lachlan wouldn’t take no for an answer on this subject. Thankfully, he seemed to be finished arguing too and stayed quiet the rest of the trip. As soon as he pulled into his driveway, I threw my door open, escaping.

Lachlan called my name, but I held up my hand, giving him a beauty queen wave as I walked across the grass to my house.

All he wanted from me was some ass, he could take a good look at it as I walked away.
