Chapter Twelve

Elena

Onceschoolwasinfull swing, things more or less settled. Honestly, I thought most people were too busy to concentrate on petty beefs—especially the assholes in New Ventures. There’d been a packet of ketchup left on my chair, but I hadn’t been dumb enough to sit down without looking first. That had been their only weak effort at outwardly humiliating me.

Oh, they’d definitely spent plenty of time over the last two weeks calling me a bitch under their breath, and Kayleigh and Abby continued to sit beside me, which I could only presume was an attempt to make me uncomfortable.

What they didn’t realize was I didn’t give a damn. I’d been called a bitch since I first grew tits. I answered to it as readily as my own name. And the only thing that made me uncomfortable about Kayleigh and Abby were their bad dye jobs and atrocious choice in perfume.

My god, we were in our twenties now. Why were they still wearing Juicy Couture? It had barely been acceptable in high school.

Lachlan Kelly continued to be a thorn in my side the two days a week I couldn’t avoid him in Spanish class. We didn’t have assigned seats, yet he always plopped his big body down beside me.

At least he smelled good. Ridiculously good.

He was looking at me while we waited for the TA to pass out test packets. Yes, three weeks into the semester, and we were already taking an exam. Our Spanish teacher did not play.

“Are you ready for this?” he asked.

I lifted a shoulder. “Of course I am.”

He huffed. “Of course you are.”

I tipped my chin down. “Are you?”

“Of course I am.”

That made me snort-laugh. “We should have a wager on who gets the higher score.”

“Yeah?” He leaned over the side of his desk. “What’s the wager?”

“Hmmm…” I tapped my chin. “If I win, you stop sitting next to me and forcing me to accept rides home from you.”

He shot me a look that was unamused. “Sorry to burden you by driving you home.”

“You should be.”

Not that I truly minded it anymore. The ride, that was. The company, I could’ve done without.

“I win, you accept your ride without complaint and deliver me coffee every morning for a week.”

My eyes rolled to the ceiling. “Why would I deliver you coffee?”

“I like coffee. I’d like it even more if it was delivered.” He stretched his legs out in front of him, crossing his ankles.

I had no idea how a man that massive could look so utterly relaxed and comfortable with himself. He took up space unapologetically, like it was his due. The TA swerved around Lachlan’s huge feet without complaining, handing him his test packet.

“Deal?” Lachlan asked.

“Fine. Deal.”

But only because I had every confidence I’d beat him. I’d been taking Spanish since I was in preschool. I’d call myself fluent, though the business language I was learning in this class was mostly new to me. Still, I didn’t anticipate this test to be a challenge.

The first two questions were short answer, then there would be a portion where we listened to a recording and wrote down a summary of what we heard. In this class, being able to write in Spanish was just as important as speaking, which made it different and frankly more interesting than the other Spanish classes I’d taken.

I took my time answering the questions, determined to best Lachlan. There was absolutely no way he was winning this. Not a chance I was going to be his coffee wench.

At first, I didn’t understand what was casting the shadow over my test. Frowning, I looked up to find Lachlan standing there, clutching his test packet. What in the world was he doing?
