“Probably, but I won’t like it, you lovely, lovely woman.”

Almost home, I raised my head from the phone to check if Lachlan’s truck was parked in his driveway.

It was, and Lachlan was standing right behind it, casually leaning against the tailgate. He wasn’t alone, though. He was having a chat that looked super friendly with a girl who wasn’t one of my roommates.

“What’s wrong?” Pen asked.

I tore my eyes from the visage of the man who was sort of mine but not really to look at my cousin.

“Lachlan’s next to his truck, talking to a girl.”

Pen hissed. “Don’t go crazy. He’s allowed to talk to girls.”

“I know that. Of course he is. But when I’m talking to you,I’mallowed to tell you seeing him even acknowledge another girl’s existence—at least one outside of my tight circle—makes me homicidal, right?”

“You can definitely tell me that. Feelings are one thing. Acting on them, when you know they’re irrational, is another. Point the cam toward him so I can assess the situation.”

I did as she asked, letting her see Lachlan laughing with the cute redhead in running shorts and a tank top.

“Okay, spin me back around.” When Pen could see me again, she grinned. “Look at their body language. Lock’s arms are crossed and he’s leaning away from her. They’re at least three feet apart, and she looks like she’s telling a funny story, not seducing your man.”

I snarled at her. “Don’t be so smart.”

“Can’t help it.”

It seemed I’d been standing in the same place too long. The girl, who was facing my way, spotted me. She rose on her tiptoes, waving.

“She’s waving at me,” I said.

“Did you wave back?” Pen asked.

“Nope. If I lift my hand, it won’t be to wave.”

Pen tsked. “She could just be asking Lock for directions. The poor girl could be innocent and you want to claw her eyes out.”

The poor girl in question started my way, jogging with a whole lot of pep in her step. What was she so happy about? Suspicious.

“She’s coming,” I murmured.

Pen laughed. “Don’t hang up. I want to hear this.”

As the redhead approached, it hit me that I knew who she was—the renter with the leaky sink. Wow, I thought she’d been eyeing Lachlan and his big toolbox. I guessed it was confirmed.

“Hey,” she called breathlessly. “You’re here.”

The girl stopped in front of me, smiling wide. There wasn’t anything threatening about her, but I really wanted to hate her.

I smiled back. I hoped Pen would be proud. “Hey, I’m here. Is your sink okay?”

“Oh, yes. You guys fixed it perfectly.” She ran her hand over her thick, curly ponytail. “I was out for a run and saw Lock coming home. He let me wait for you with him.”

My forehead crinkled. “You were waiting for me?”

“Yeah, so”—she glanced to the side—“when you were at my house, I thought I recognized you. I racked my brain, and then I remembered—you’re the girl from theT. That night, I was there with Nate and—”

“What’s your name?” I asked sharply.

“Sera. Well, Seraphina, but everyone calls me Sera.”
